Trying to find a dual exhaust from header back that fits the conv,
just ordered the Hochkis X- brace to help with the clearance issue,
hoping to stay with the transverse type, any thoughts on quarter
exit vs rear exit? any fumes with top down on quater exit?
Looking at the pypes SGF70
Thanks Dan, 69 conv

Dan,

From what I could tell, most of the box kits do not fit convertibles. Have the exhaust made by a local muffler shop as it'll be custom fit and you'll be very happy you went this way vs. a boxed kit. I have the Hotchkiss x-brace and SFC's on my 68 vert and have no clearance issues with a 2.5" exhaust coming out of Hooker super comps into Flowmaster 50's then up over the rear end and out under the bumper. I paid $350.00 to have this done including cost of the Flowmasters. Took the shop 4 hours to get it right. They also made a H pipe ~8" back of the collectors.

Forgot to add, when I bought the car it had turn downs at the rear end. Sitting at stop lights rear seat passengers got gassed at times. I would never run turn downs at the rear end again.

On the 69 I would go full or out the rear as that's what they had factory and GM did a great job getting the look right on the 69's. On 67-68 the exit needs to be in the 1/4 just behind the wheel. It looks good on the 69 but you will kick up some parking lot dirt. 67-68 just don't look the same in my opinion with rear exit.

I run turn downs but ahave coup. I like the turn downs and the sound from my 40's with 2 1/2 inch exhaust. The car has been apart for a few years and I have thought about going to 1/4 exit but I also like the turn down look!! Thinking of a doing a 3 inch exit muffler with my turn downs this time just some looks is all.

I have a 68 vert. I initially installed a fowmaster "69 camaro" system that doesn't fit verts... It fit fine except the floor brace woulodn't go on. I bought a hotchkiss brace and that fit fine.
This system was part number 17139, dual mufflers full tailpipes.

Later, I replaced the flowmaster mufflers with Borla turbo's, the borla's sound WAY better.

Later yet I had a new center section bent / welded up with an X instead of an 'H. Better yet.

Still have the flowmaster tailpipes, the stainless tips are to die for. Unfortunately after 8 years they are getting a lil beat, and flowmaster no longer sells them separately. Maybe if I call them and beg for replacements?

i ran hooker shorty headers, 2.5 exhaust with stock floor brace
and the single trans mounted flow master muffler
and then straight out the back...no exhast smell with top
down... i like the single muffler cause you can keep exhaust
up under body to hide it' flow master makes a muffler now
that exhaust enters from side of muffler and out the end. saw it on firebird. looks cleaner then mine my exhaust system cost me 350.00 including muffler took him about 6 hours to do
good luck jay

I installed this kit from Flowmaster on my 68 convertible:

http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3706&zenid=5b7dd533c4dc088968b7cbc7073e4c45

The catalog says that this kit is not for convertibles, but I bought it anyway based on the advice of another vert owner. It retains a transverse muffler setup and fit fine with the hotchkis X-brace. This kit dumps straight back, but the tail pipe can be cut behind the rear wheel for a stock 67/68 look. I have it going out the back, but I am planning on taking it to a muffler shop to have it modified to the stock 68 location. Great kit, and sounds great too!

I did mine with Flowtech headers

with an American thunder system...2½"

with the pipes coming out

The smell is no problem but the resonance is hurting...otherwise, love the sound:yes:
Will install a H X brace but I know I will have to modify it myself
If anyone's got pictures...please post them:thumbsup:
