: differential yoke out of round???? causing vibration

so after months of tracking down a vibration, thinking it was driveline angles and such... i had a repair shop put the car up on jacks.... and ran it... (i wouldn't do this)

the driveshaft had a noticible blur as soon as it got to the vibration speed.. but only at the differential yoke end... not at the trans end..

to temporarily solve it, we put 2 hoseclamps on the shaft, (to counterbalance) and with some trial and error, the vibration is gone.

we then put a dial indicator on to find out that the yoke is swinging the driveshaft, .022 to one side , so its run out is .011 off. i can't imagine that the pinion gear is causing this, but it very well might be.

this is a new one to me... but i need to know if I can simply remove the old yoke and install a new one (measure it) and go, or (as I am almost positive) that the whole rear need to come out and preload set with a new crush sleeve?

the rear end is the original 12bolt (1969 Camaro)

thanks

I have seen that happen when some one beats the yoke off with a hammer instead of useing a puller. The right way to do it is as you said new crush collar and set preload.

It's no big deal to replace the yoke. Remove the old yoke, smear a little RTV sealant into the splines of the new yoke, put it on with a new nut, put red Locktite on the threads and torque the nut to 150 foot pounds. That's it. 150 foot pounds won't crush the spacer and won't change the bearing preload.

I've seen several new yokes that were not machined correctly. They are off just like you described.
