Hi all,
I took a 355 out of my 69 and just put in a new 383, The starter dont hit right, it is a mini starter that I had on the other motor, it has 4 mounting holes, but only 2 get it even close to the correct spot.. It misses the flywheel every few starts, I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone can recommend a good mini starter that wont break my bank.. THanks for the help.. Ed

I've had this happen on a regular starter. I shimmed the outside bolt, this moves the starter closer to the ring gear.

Yes you indeed need to shim the starter motor. Don't waste money buying a new one.

Mini-starts are notorious for needing shimming. Mine needed nearly .060" worth of shims. Sounds like you have the opposite probem.

Is there a lot of paint on the mounting pad on the block? Maybe you could scrape it off if there is.

Thanks for the info guys, is it ok to just shim one side, I want to make sure so I dont destroy the new flexplate.. Thanks
