If someone gave you $500 to buy a complete distributor system, with your experiences and knowledge, what would you purchase? MSD, Mallory, Pertronix, Accel, etc. My ZZ3 needs a replacement distributor as I am not happy with the HEI that is currently in it. Just need an upgrade!
Thanks.....

I just bought a D.U.I. from performance distributers, that is set with the curve to your engine. I'm very happy with it. It was about $300.00. Maybe you could add a MSD box to it ?

I have never tried DUI but have heard they are very good. I have a msd pro-billet HEI...this thing is a work of art, and the mechanical advance curve is fully adjustable graemlins/thumbsup.gif

msd bro billet, and the msd box of choice, at very least a 6al. the adjustability in the distrubutor alone is worth the money. plus they are just a sweet piece. thats what i run, and want for nothing else in an ignition. the only aditional things to consider are different msd boxes have different features, depending on what you want. the dui setups are nice so i hear, but i really can't see them being better built or more adjustable than the msd. just my .02

Sounds like my purchase will be the MSD system. Is there any problems in hooking this up? I have a GM HEI unit in there now. Sort of a self contained package.

The msd pro-billet HEI is a direct swap for a gm HEI. Everything is exactly the same, the only difference is way better internals and a fully adjustable mechanical advance. And, it is awfully purty too :D

I hate to admit it but I just pulled my trusty old GM HEI and dropped in an MSD pro billet, 6AL box, and Blaster II coil. The engine idles better (solid as a rock) and seems a little more responsive on the low end, but it runs exactly the same times in the 1/4 that it did before.

The ProBillet is a very nice piece and the whole setup set me back only $479 including a new coil wire and bracket. The rev limiter is nice too.

What is wrong with the HEI? They do stick the advance tower sometimes but aside from that you won't find much better.

Actually the HEI is ok, I was looking for a change with something that will allow additional adjustments if needed. The unit itself sits very close to the firewall, in fact it does hit. I also need to adjust the vacuum as I am getting about 56 degrees with a 14 static, 20 mechanical and 56 total.

New vac cans are around $12. That leaves $488 for beer!

I think the HEI is a good reliable system but It will need a new curve though. Save your money and re-curve the HEI or just drop in one of Dave's small body HEI's and be done with it. Use the leftover cash to rent a bunch of spaghetti western videos. :D

I agree with the others...get the HEI curved, maybe a better module, and call it good. I gave about $309 for my msd HEI simply because I wanted the adjustability (for use with different engine combo's). Plus, I have used up my supply of HEI's and needed something for the upcoming 388.

I have the same setup as Eric68. It works great. Install can involve a bit of wiring but the instructions are well written. Make sure you do a good wiring job and use the diode if you still run a voltage regulator.

I thought I made up my mind on what to get now I am not sure. Perhaps a recurve will do it. I have plenty of beer in the fridge and every spaghetti western Clint Eastwood made. Now what? Next week is the Good Guys show in Pleasenon, Ca. Perhaps the extra bucks will go there smile.gif Thanks for the great comments.........
