found a yellow I really like (God, it's a ford color of all things). I have an old hood that is primered, how hard would it be for a novice to spray this hood to get a good look at the color? obviously, I don't mind taking shortcuts since it's not actually going on the car... what's the quickest, easiest way to do this? I have a guy that would loan me his equiptment.

If the can has its label, read the amount of reducer and hardner it needs, get those chemicals you need and go for it! If your friend has ALL the equipment you need that is.

Mark I recently painted my eng. bay and I'm a novice too. I used 69 cortez silver and after I sprayed I was not impressed with the color until I clear coated it....wow what a differance.
I think you should do it for sure but clear coat it also to see the true color. good luck and post some pics of your test, maybe get some opinions.

If and when you pick the color you like, remember to use the same undercoat otherwise it, more than likely, will be different and you may not be a happy camper.

Read the posts by MartinSR in the "how to contributions" sticky at the top of the body section. I just did my front as well and it was my first mix and spray job. (Its under the front end fresh up for my 67' thread)
Good luck!:beers:

With the right gun\compressor setup and a little practice time on that old hood, you'll be surprised how easy it is. Have him show you some technique and you'll be good to go.

To make it a little easier... look in the Dupli-color section for the touch-up spray bomb ?
And don't feel bad about it being a "ford color".... its only a color.

I highly recommend this. Make sure you use the same primer and sealers under the paint so you get the real colors.

You don't have to buy a whole pint or quart either. If you do then the supplier does not like dealing with non-accounts.
