where do you put 6X9 speakers in a 68 convertible?

Looking for a location. Currently in the trunk but speakers have muffled sound with top down.

Patrick ive seen those portable 6x9 boxes in convertible. You can buy them at any beat shop if you want to go that rout.

Unfortunately there is no place for an easy mount for 6X9 speakers that aren't muffled by a retracted top. If you want a sound system, it's smaller speakers in the kick panels and a box in the trunk.

On my 68 vert, previous owner had mounted 3-way 5 1/4's in the bottom of the doors and 2-way 4" in the kick panels. Not sure you can mount much larger speakers without some serious custom work under the rear seat or around the armrest areas.

Just to be honest, above 40mph with the top down all I can hear is motor so I don't play the stereo much at all unless I'm sitting waiting for my kids at school.

I just completed this 6x9 install....

It does require a fold down seat though. This speaker placement is the reason I found and installed the fold down setup.

It also is hidden with the seat folded up. And with the seat up it still sounds better than before.

The difference is mind (or better yet... ear)-blowing.

I'll post a thread on the whole install deal soon.

The pizza was a free one from the Papa Johns Camaro free pizza special last Wednesday.

I like that fold down seat deal.

I did mine a few years ago, the threads on the board can be found. I used 2 way separates in back, a 5" just above the rear seat bottom, with a tweeter pointing forward in the peice above the armrest. In front used 4x6 plate speakers with separate 4" and tweeters, in the kick panels. Used a 4 channel infinity amp to drive em @ 50 watts each, and a kenwood "all in one" powered sub to fill in the bottom.

It sounds ok, not super great and wonderful. Might try a retro sound head unit next, the ole kenwood is gettin kinda old and the cd changer don't work any more.

Did you cut holes in the metal structure behind the fold down seat?I was contemplating that route as I have a fold down,But it looked to me that the structual integrity might be compromised. There seems to be alot more going on in that area than in a coupe.......Maybe its no big deal,I'm ready for some 6X9's back there.

Jim, I went with the retrosound unit and am very pleased with it. Just make sure you get the latest design - it has the usb connection dongle in the back, not on the face. I ordered it straight from RetroSound and sent the one from Summit back as the one from Summit was the old design.

I use a 4gig thumbdrive in it and have enough of any type of music to keep me and the wife happy all the time.

i put some pics of it in my album showroom.

So far i only have speakers in the bottom of the doors up front, but have thought about adding some to the bottom at the rear of the doors. someone here has a thread on that setup where he made nice fiberglass piece that ran the whole length of the door bottom area.

:D A radio and speakers are completely pointless on my ride.... I don't think I could hear a $3,000 system.
