Pontiac's, such as the GTO's, Tempest, LeMans, etc., all have coil springs out back.

What do you mean by a 2nd gen. ? If you mean a 2nd generation f-body (Firebird or Camaro), The rears are to wide and the leaf spring perches are not in the correct location.

its a trans am.he said 54 inch from backing plate to backing plate.and approx 45 inches from center leaf spring to center leaf spring.does any bodie know off hand how wide the springs are.i could go out and mesure mine but im sick today and its raining,i know my backing plates are approx 53 1/4 wide.my drive shaft has u-bolts and his has the straps so i mite need to change u-joints.im planning on buying this rearend.its a new rebuilt 8.5 posi with 373 gears for $400 bucks so its a good deal if i can make it work

X-2...the 2nd gen rear ends are just to wide and would not work without major modification and even then you would possibly need a major positive offset rim to keep the tires from rubbing the fenders.Stick with a rear end from a early F-body or an X-body (Nova).

A Trans Am IS just a fancy firebird. :)

A good deal is only a good deal, if you can use it.

The above dimensions have been a reference too for many years. They are from reputable sources and I would not doubt them.

For good measure, I went and measured my 1969 12-bolt and from center of spring to center of spring - I get 42 1/2". I am still not going to modify that chart for that dimension or the 1/8 difference from your 45 1/2" dimension.

Also note Firebird rears from 1st gens are often 1" wider (wide trac) then Camaro's.

Rear springs are wider at the rear shackles than at the spring perch.
The springs follow the contour of the trunk floor.

The 70 up Camaro an Firebird rear end is only 3/4 to 1" wider overall than a 67-69 rear. You can move the spring perches and use one with very little problem on a 67-68 car.You don't have the tire clearance issues that you have on a 69 because of the rounded rear wheel openings.

yea i have plenty of tire clearance.the 1973 trans am rear is 45 1/2 at spring mounts so if i want to use it im going to have to move perches inwards.im looking for a another rear first.not haveing much luck around here.i seen one this morning on cl in tacoma but long ways away.so not sure what im doing yet.thx guys for all the helpfull info:beers:
