Its seems the more information I gather, and the more I read the more confused i become. I have a 68 Camaro with 350 Crate motor and am planning some mild HP upgrades (Dart Heads) nothing wild it currently has a Powerglide and Hurst Vmatic shifter and from what I understand Eaton pozi 3:36 gears with 17" wheels in the rear.
My plan was to order the 700R4 kit from CK Performance which comes with all the mounts etc and change the shifter to a Lokar linkage shifter, now it seems I should be looking at the 200-4R transmission with my ratios the 700R4 in 1st and 2nd would be a waste of time...
Because we are on the other side of the world freight alone is in the USD$700 mark so I am stuck with the decision i make any and all help appreciated

The 700r4 will be fine. The 700's 1st gear is low, but not a problem unless you are running 4.10 or lower gears. I would actually recommend 3.42 gears, so I'm sure your 3.36's will be fine. It may also be easier to get 700r4 parts than the 2004r in New Zealand.

Thanks for the help yes parts are easier for the 700r4, but hopefully with the rebuilt unit that im going to get from the states I wont need any parts for a least a little while.

From a tranny to rear gear ratio point of view you should be OK. Typically people will consider the 200R4 over the 700R4 when their rear end is above 3.73. Reason being is that the 700 has a lower 1st gear (3.06) than the 200 (2.74). This results in a very "short" 1st gear. I have a 700R4 with 3.73 rear and would not recommend anything higher than 3.73 rear with that tranny. If anything, I would bump up the 3.36 to something higher (as already suggested) but what you got now will do just fine. If you do end up with 200R4 then you will want to change out the 3.36 to something higher for sure.

Thanks my understanding is that the 700r4 is a tougher box also thats why I want to go down this route

I even though I agree with you, the debate is still out on this one around here. Some good threads for you in case you haven't read them already. The first thread has a lot of good other linked threads inside of it.
