: 1968 camaro all original with cruise control
knightmoose Sep 7th, 09, 12:45 PM 1968 camaro with cruise control has 2 cables 1 on top and a lower cable, "cruise doesnt work"
the lower speedometer cable snapped about 2 weeks ago, i bought another cable and it to crumpled up? thus i bought another from NPD and this cable doesnt spin at all, to rule out the servo i am now just using 1 cable, ity screws on easy at the transmission but does not turn at all? Im now beginning to think that maybe the plastic gear inside is also bad?
When backing up the car i here some ticking sound but not anything major? what do you suggest i do, uncreq the small scres and the plate where the cable connects and pull out the speedo gear for inspection? please advice thanks
knightmoose Sep 7th, 09, 12:54 PM i pulled out the plastic speedo gear some of the teeth have some small strands of strings which i pulled off also some of the teeth a few looked smooched together i am not an illustrated person i hope this helps in determining why the cable wont turn?
knightmoose Sep 7th, 09, 01:00 PM the speedo gear has 19 teeth its a power glide original tranny i hope that makes sense? looks maybe mildly worn..cable doesnt turn at all when driving..
knightmoose Sep 8th, 09, 02:08 PM after pulling out the speedo and looking inside the case through the hole the power glide actaully has a pressed on driving metal gear thus hopefully i will simply have to just replace the speedo plastic gear if not im going to have a some issues..

Still need to deal with the servo if you want cruise. If not, leave with one cable. There are kits out there to add on an electronic model and have the turn signal lever with all switches on it. What I got , if you can see it thru the steering wheel.
knightmoose Sep 8th, 09, 05:10 PM zdld17 thanks for the reply right now im trying jsut to get my speedometer to work with just a cable running from the transmission straight to the back of the speedometer cluster the cable itself doesnt spin at all. The cable is brand new, anyways i found out today the the drive gear and the driven gear 1 is plastic that comes right out the other is actually pressed on as the tranny is a power glide, so im hoping all i have to do is replace the speedo gear and hopefully that will fix the issue, as far as the servo not working that will be anothe topic all together thanks.

Actually that does looks cool, i thought it would take away from the roiginality of the car some how as my 68 is un touched all original protected plate original engine etc, do you have a site for the after market cruise mechanism for the turn signal? Did you have to replace the servo or does the entire thing come as a kit? I didnt know that i could zoom in on your picture thus i can see it through the steering wheel, truthfully i would go that route because the car did come with cruise control and i have wanted to get it fixed, but just cant find a servo or even a good mechanic that knows anything about them, some have flat out told me i was dumb for thinking the 68 came with cruise control??? actually the 67 camar with it also as an option lol.. i have seen some at JC whitney but they look kind of really retro.. i think yours doesnt have that retro look, and fits the car very well..

I was thinking the same thing till I looked in the White book. 305 K30 equipped in 67, 327 equipped in 68. Not shown for 69, maybe that's why I didn't think any first gens had it.

anyways to get back on track right now its all about fixing the speedometer, im waiting for the speedo gear to come in. Hopefully that will fix the problem.
Eric Kammerer Sep 9th, 09, 11:22 AM I am having trouble understanding. If the first cable snapped, and then second replacement cable you installed "crumpled up", it sounds like the driven gear (on the tailshaft) and the speedometer gear (on the bullet that unbolts from the trans) would have to be turning. When you are buying replacement cables, are you getting the whole housing too, or just feeding a new cable down the OE housing? It sounds to me like you might have the cable binding in the housing. If the tranny end wasn't turning, how would the cable get snapped or crumpled up?
knightmoose Sep 9th, 09, 02:08 PM thanks for the reply
the cables are brand new, the first cable the end piece snapped it was an old cable, regardless of whether or not i have 2 cables,
when running just 1 brand new cable complete housing etc, down to the tranny and having the other end of that same cable in my hand when driving it should spin it doesnt spin at all, the cable is new and is fine.. thus i feel its the speedo gear as the teeth are worn and very closed smugged together it could be bindingthe cable preventing it from turning.
