: Convertible top cover tearing up trim
68problemchild Sep 7th, 09, 01:45 PM Hey guys. Everytime I put this convertible cover on its tearing up the trim it attaches to. Any fixes?
Any places/links for a better cover that does not attach to the chrome trim?
See pics below.
KevinW Sep 7th, 09, 02:55 PM Patrick, did not see any closeup pics of your problem. You are hooking the plastic hooks on the outside of the trim and rolling them towards the inside, right? If you go inside to outside, they could scratch the trim.
Car nut Sep 7th, 09, 08:12 PM Agreed, I don't think there is any other or better way. I don't remember ever scratching my car but I wish there was a way to remove the ding i put in my trim. Brian
68problemchild Sep 8th, 09, 05:13 PM Just a clarification. The tension on the boot cover is actually lifting the chrome trim up off the car.
Car nut Sep 8th, 09, 05:43 PM Did you try putting the boot on the hot sun too strech it??
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 05:55 PM Ah!, you have to fold the top in a certain way to lower the stack height, so the cover is not so tight. There have been posts on 'how to fold the top" :D
I've seen it a lot and my car's pinch well trim is lifting too. I believe it's just the trim was not installed properly that is causes it to lift...
wagonman Sep 8th, 09, 10:39 PM How much force are you using to install the boot?
Are you doing it in warm sunny weather to ease on installation?
Perhaps your top frames stacking height is incorrect.
Can you post a picture of how far your top folds with the boot removed?

My top gets put down properly and my boot isn't too tight, that's why I say the molding wasn't installed properly... Same on most of the ones I've seen lifting. The most pressure put on my molding is during driving.
68problemchild Sep 9th, 09, 07:39 PM Thanks guys. I definitely was folding wrong to start with. I have ordered new rubber stops and will put back down when they come in.

I agree with Dennis. On my 67, the molding is pulling up - this car has undergone an amateur restoration years ago and I suspect that they either installed the trim incorrectly, or should have replaced them with new ones. On my 69, which is unrestored and has never had the molding removed to my knowledge, the trim is still tight to the body. Same boot is being swapped between the two cars.
68problemchild Sep 12th, 09, 04:56 PM I have not dug into the loose trim piece. Are their special brackets or something to hold it in place correctly I need to buy?
provfirescott Sep 15th, 09, 01:55 PM My trim is lifting(Going to fix that this winter) And my top fits perfect
