: 69 staggered shocks in a 67 mono leaf car HELP HELP
tekin Sep 8th, 09, 10:00 AM ok i got a 67 camaro with mono leaf springs and front facing shocks, my buddy has a 69 camaro that has staggered shocks, Is there anyway I can use his rear end and do the staggered shock thing or will I have to use my mono shock plates, or can you tell me what my options are here is what parts I have::
67 camaro
-mono leafs
-front mount shocks
his 69 camaro
-mulit leaf 5
-staggered shocks
Please help or give me part numbers, I am confused cause some say you have to reweld shock towers which I can not do, so let me know
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 10:21 AM Tekin, you have to use DSE's Multileaf stock shock plate for non-staggered applications. See this chart:
http://www.detroitspeed.com/productpages/indproduct/rearsuspensionprod/lower_shock_plates_prod_test.htm
tekin Sep 8th, 09, 10:33 AM ok well i came across that but, that is my problem, some say you use those brackets and you still have to weld in a top shock tower plate to get staggered. Can I use this plate and have a staggered setup or will i still have the 67 look for shocks
also please remember my the guy is gonna give me a completely unbolted rear end with the leaf springs and all so the bottom shock plates are gonna be there. So I am worried about the top shock tower
BPOS Sep 8th, 09, 11:04 AM The rear end will bolt in. You will still have both shocks in front of the axle. You can re-use your current lower shock plates for the swap, but you "might" need extenders for the tops of the shocks. Since it is a multi-leaf rear, the spring perches on the rear will be deeper. If you plan on using your current mono leaf springs, you will have to buy or build spacers to go BELOW the spring (ABOVE) the shock plate) to fill in the gap, as the multi-leaf springs are thicker than the monos. If you use the 5 leaf mult-leaf springs you can skip this step.
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 11:25 AM Tekin, sorry, here a little more info. Your 67 has both shocks in front of the rear, the 69 has 1 shock in front and 1 behind. You keep the tops of your shock mountings the same as they are now. You can mount the 69 rear with the 5 leaf springs in your 67 and use the pass side 69 multi leaf plate (69 pass side is in the front, same as 67). You just need to buy the multi leaf lower plate for the drivers side. This is part number 040302L (as in left side=drivers side). Just confirm this with DSE when you order. You will also need to buy new spring pads as they are likely to be worn if they are original.
OK?
tekin Sep 8th, 09, 11:38 AM i just sent you a email check it out
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 12:49 PM got your email. You need to confirm the 8.2 rear in your buddy's car has the multi-leaf mounting brackets. All 8.2 rears had mono springs. Either he removed the mono brackets and rewelded the multileaf ones, or it is really an 8.5 with multis. Or is he using spacers on the brackets? If he has mono brackets, then you need to keep the monos or use spacers for the springs.
Swapping his entire drivetrain (700r4/driveshaft/rear) will work fine, better in fact! Because he did the driveshaft mod for you already. Make sure you get the TV system along with the crossmember. You may need to tweak the TV system if you have different carb setups. You just need to buy the 67 T handle conversion kit from Bowtie overdrives for you shifter.
You should be able to do the swapping very easily! The difference in the setups is going to be a shock to you :) Have fun!
tekin Sep 8th, 09, 12:53 PM that's right, you are correct on the mono and multi leaf for a 8.2, and yeah i will get the tv cable and crossmember, but my biggest concern is the shocks, and damn I would hate to be stuck with a chunk of metal, so can you clarify if my shock plates from 67 can be used on his 69 staggered rear, even if I kept his multi setup and worse case scenario, just put my shock plates under his rear with his multi springs
EMAIL ME PLEASE
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 01:03 PM Rick, I sent an email, but it is easier to post here :)
novaderrik Sep 8th, 09, 01:08 PM you can use the mono leaf spring shock plates on the multi leaf spring, you just gotta put shock extensions on. i ran my Nova like that for 3 years. i also didn't have the stock spring mounts on the rear axle- i welded on a set of Mopar spring mounts. the only reason i did that was because when i put the newer 8.5 rear in, i was still running the mono leaf springs that would have required something to take up the space in the mounts. it was easier for me to weld on a $10 pair of mounts from a circle track chassis shop than it would have been to make up spacers.
tekin Sep 8th, 09, 01:37 PM ok so i will not get screwed with getting this rearend cause i will be able to setup 67 shocks on it right
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 01:54 PM It will fit and you have low cost options on how to make it work. But the working condition of the parts is the key. As long as you know what you are getting do not have any running issues, it will work for your car. :)
TJS69 Sep 8th, 09, 02:01 PM All 8.2 rears had mono springs.
I have never heard this before. Is it fact ?
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 03:15 PM I have never seen an 8.2 with multis, the 8.5 10 bolts could have multis though.

Just did some checking on the camaros.org site. And they say all 12 bolts and all cars with 350's had multis be it 10 bolt or 12 bolt. If the car had a 307 or 327 it had monos. Hope I remembered that right. Otherwise check over at that site and see for yourself.
davidpozzi Sep 8th, 09, 07:12 PM If the 69 rear is an 8.2" unit, it probably has mono leaf perches same as your 67. In that case, just use your 67 mono leaf springs and plates. If you want to use the multi leaf springs, use the 69 RH plate but get the DSE Left hand plate to mount the shock forward of the axle. It will also have a higher hole for proper shock travel.
You can use your mono leaf plates on a multi leaf spring if you get shock extenders, but the mono leaf plate is weaker/thinner than a multi leaf plate and not as desirable.
Mono shocks have an open eye on the bottom end, multi leaf shocks have a stud. You can convert your mono shocks to stud by buying the studs at the auto parts store.

Steiner Sep 8th, 09, 07:23 PM My '69 8.2 rear had five leaf multi's. I thought the 8.5 didn't even come out until the 70's?
KevinW Sep 8th, 09, 08:13 PM OK, OK, :) I forgot about the 1000 or so 69 Camaros that some fool ordered the SS350 option without ordering a trans option and got a powerglide transmission which came with a 10 bolt with multi's. Like I said I have not seen an 8.2 with multis :D But if the rear is a 69 8.2 with factory multi perches, its a rare beast

I think I might have one too. I don't feel so bad about scrapping the original 10 bolt open now.

Sweet!!! I was about to take it to the scrap yard but I'll make you a deal on it for five grand. :D
My VIN tag just has X44 and I know it was originally an auto but had an M20 when I bought it. The code on the rear end is for a '69 with 2.56 gear. I figured that may have meant it was a Powerglide.
I'm taking the original leafs, rear, fuel tank, seats, etc. over to a local shop and giving them to a guy who says he runs across people all the time who have cars in pieces and want to put stock stuff back in....for God knows what reason.
JAYARTER Sep 10th, 09, 09:20 PM i did just the reverse of what you are doing.
put 67 pont firebird rear with factory traction bars in
my 69 convert. Had to use 69 lower shock mounts so i could retain staggered shocks. 10 bolt posi
been running it about a year works super. With traction bars and staggered shocks it will hardy break rear wheels loose from dead stopi also went from mono leaf to 4 leaf rear springs.
using monre rear shocks, stock replacement
