Ok, I have absolutely NO experience tuning a carb.......

I have a 355 with a comp cam 284H, Dart heads, MSD ignition (no vac advance)etc.

I had a "friend of a friend" that builds race carbs and does dyno tuning, build a carb for me. I gave him all my specs and goals for the car etc and he built a Holley HP 750 series carb (mech secondaries)for me. I'm planning on having him dyno tune it for max performance ( I never go to the track), but in the mean time I'd like to tune it alittle more to get it to run stronger ....

Right now I'm pretty sure its running real rich.... plugs are sooty and the exhaust puts out alot of soot too. The gas mileage also sucks and the car tends to bog down low.

I'm sure I'll need to mess with the timing, the advance springs and the jets etc, but how do I set the idle mixture with an HP series carb.... I know you can tune it at all "four corners" ??????

Basically if someone can give me a basic "tuning for Dummies" approach, I would appreciate it....

Any specific books as a good source for this stuff ???

Here are a couple more that you might like.
The more reading about carb tuning you do the more it will help you familiarize yourself with the whole procedure.

At AED look at the box at the left.Go down to the parts sectioon. Now click on tuning tips.

At this site go down till you see Common prodlems, this way you avoid all the Authors B.S.

Reading your plugs should be accompanied with setting up a carb.

Hera is a link to good info for unleaded fuel.
