The new heads are on, and the roller cam is the current project.

I bought a reinforced steel timing cover (Milodon #65555), and the corresponding cam button to fit. I used some clay to check the end play clearance, and it's about .100"-.115", so I have some work to do. I was really surprised that matching timing cover/cam button would leave so much end play. The Milodon cam button is .680" tall.

Is .115" clearance between the button and cover necessitate a new, longer button; or should I somehow shim it between the cam face and button?

I would think either would work as long as the shims don't start bending the cam button retaining plate; I would think it would.

I always liked the Cloyes aluminum cover for this because it has the cam button on the cover and is adjustable from the outside for end play.

I shimmed mine by adding or removing shims between the button and the cam gear. My parts are Comp cams and as I recall they were looking for .010 to .015 forward and aft play. Yours may be different.

The scary thing to look for is one lifter coming in contact with an adjcent lobe. I heard this can take place with as little as .050 of missalignment. I would say tighten it up.
