I attempted to get my ignition key cylinder out today and was unsuccessful. The tabs where the key is inserted is broken. The key is in the accessory position, and it won't pull out. There us supposed to be a spring to push on to release it, but I am unsure of where it is. The cylinder does not move to the off position which is why i am replacing it. Why can't the 69 Camaro be as simple as the 68?

I just recently replaced mine. After you remove the steeing wheel, lock plate and blinker plate you will see a thin slot towards the top of the column. Take a very thin screwdriver, put in the slot and push in on the spring loaded tab then the cylinder should pull straight out. You may also want to replace the plastic gear on the back side of the cylinder as these are known to strip out

69 Huggero has the solution. That should work.

You didn't mention if you had a tilt column or a standard (non-adjustable) column. I assume that you had a standard column since tilt columns were pretty rare in 1969. The following is a picture of a standard column housing showing the location of the retainer tab.

Glad to hear that you got it out. I just replaced the cylinder and the key warning buzzer on the 69 column I picked up for my son's 71 Nova. It is an easy job if you know where to look. If you don't have a lock plate removal tool that part can be a pain.
