: Tinted repro glass
Aaron67 Sep 14th, 09, 08:11 PM looks like i can get clear or green tinted replacement glass. anybody have pics of the green tinted stuff? green tint with plum paint doesn't sound like a good combo. but if it's light enough that the green won't look bad, that makes me wonder if it'll be dark enough to do any good. would I be better off getting clear glass then getting a professional tint job on it?
BigDawgDavao Sep 14th, 09, 10:47 PM Are you replacing all?
Have you looked at the smoked ones that Frank with Prodigy has? I've ordered a set for my 67. I think they'll look pretty sharp with my red/white stripe 67 RS.
Aaron67 Sep 14th, 09, 10:50 PM I was planning on replacing it all. If it's gray smoked glass that you're talking about, I think I'll look into it. I was only aware of the clear and green stuff that all the parts houses carry. Thanks for the tip.
BigDawgDavao Sep 15th, 09, 12:03 AM They have some photos on their www.gpsuperstore.com website. Just have to register for the forum and can get some more info on them, plus they have a couple of photos. The front windshield is factory green tint, but the rest being gray smoked would probably keep the interior dark enough that you wouldn't really notice the greenish tint. Or you could order without the windshield and get a clear one from elsewhere.
Mark C Sep 15th, 09, 09:16 AM Original green tinted glass is really hard to tell that it is even tinted, you almost have to hold it up to clear glass to see the difference.
Aaron67 Sep 15th, 09, 02:21 PM Thanks Mark! that's the kind of feedback I was looking for.
TraxUnderground Sep 15th, 09, 03:30 PM Beware of aftermarket glass and how they are tempered. They all have blotches when seen in certian light conditions because the way they are tempered (so I have learned). I have had this issue and ended up with a used GM backglass. It may not bother you but it did me.
If you go get your glass take a pair of polarized glasses with you and look at the glass through them and you will see what I mean.
Heres a thread I started a while back..
Good luck

Green tinted looks fine in my MM.
ProdigyCustoms Sep 15th, 09, 04:48 PM There is a real difference in clear and tinted. The smoked is killer for a hot rod though. We sell quite a bit of the smoked, it is the same price for clear, tinited, or smoked
Here are some pics of the smoked glass in cars we have done. Different color cars, one indoors at SEMA, the other outdoors.
You can see more cars with it on our website in the project section

cost?
And i woulda imagine after you use your glass to make sure it fits, wouldnt you think it would be easier to take it to a tinter prior to installing it on the car? they tinted that cuda or w/e on muscle car and wow gotta love the " expert " letting his water drip into the ducts on the dash and all over the package tray, but hey he gets paid big bucks to be on tv!
Aaron67 Sep 15th, 09, 05:52 PM Green tinted looks fine in my MM.
is it dark enough to actually do much to cut down on interior heat? got any pics of that green glass installed on your car???
Frank, thanks for the pics of your glass installed on cars. pics worth a thousand words....

It may have and technically it would. I run with the glass down and have a parchment gut. I'm not a fan of the heat so I don't pleasure drive when it's brutal and if I did I'd run an A/C car. No pics. Tinted glass sold to someone needing it more than me. My error: looked not looks. Only front and rear tinted now (PPG. minimal blotchiness). Origional rear tinted back glass awaits next build. As stated by Mark it's sometimes hard to tell the diff. I've got a good amount of glass around and I have to double check at times. Needs to be against a certain background or lit a certain way. I like green tinted in cars...looks approriate. On a stock appearing car anyway.
Aaron67 Sep 15th, 09, 06:15 PM Well my car is a DD and I'm in SoCal, so A/C and tinted windows are high on the list of upgrades. And I have a black interior, too.

Frank's glass looks good because of what the cars are. Smoked glass in a stock car immediately looks out of place to me. There is an association with origionality that quicly pronounces a non factory item. Others not aware of this fact would not give it a second thought.
Mark C Sep 15th, 09, 06:35 PM Heres the difference between OE tinted and clear glass. Its very exagerated with the light coloered wall behind it, once its on the car its barely noticable. Tinted is on the right, clear on the left.

ProdigyCustoms Sep 15th, 09, 07:56 PM Mav68eric, you asked about cost, the kits run $650 for all the glass in the car. It is packaged in a huge padded box (72 X 24 X 36) as you can imagine to protect it so it must go truck freight to a business or the closest depot, shipping is fat rated at $125.
Believe it, our breakage rate is really low!
For those that asked about heat, Most factory A/C cars came with tinted glass for just that reason. The smoked really cuts down heat, blocks sun.
Someone mentioned a stock car and smoked glass, I agree if the car is original down to the rally's or dog dish caps, it looks out of place. But put a set of big and little welds or 17" TT2s and it looks killer!

Like a said, a set of wheels and the smoked glass..Shazam! Instant hit!
Aaron67 Sep 16th, 09, 02:51 PM shoot, i think it'll look just fine w/ my rally's. thanks guys, the pictures help a ton.
frank, just curious, but is the glass itself tinted or is there a plastic laminate in the middle that's tinted?
ProdigyCustoms Sep 16th, 09, 05:38 PM It is made smoked just like new glass. The color is very close to the rear passenger door on a SUV.
