: Need Transmission Help
Haro Sep 15th, 09, 01:14 PM i could use some help with a problem
i need a 700r4 transmission for a V8, ive called all junk yards within 100 miles to my house and ive only found 1.
the problem is i went and bought it today costed 217 dollars, but after i got it home and took the pan off i noticed it had metal in the pan, and brown transmission fluid. i was thinking the metal could be from where it spider cracked on the back wall by the tail shaft housing, but i cant explain the brown fluid.
should i take it back or try it anyways? i have a 30 day waranty and im doubtful i can find another in my price range.
SPARKY69 Sep 15th, 09, 01:19 PM welcome to team camaro!! dont think your gonna find a perfect one in a junk yard!! fix it, change the filter and fluild ..put it in the car and see how it does, if it does work out then have that one rebuilt!!
Haro Sep 15th, 09, 01:25 PM only problem is its going to be hard putting it in myself, so id rather not have to take it in and out a extra time if i can avoid it, plus i have my old tranny i could rebuild and save 200 dollars :D
as for getting it rebuilt, haha! im trying to get it running so i can move because there no jobs here so i m pretty broke.
SPARKY69 Sep 15th, 09, 01:29 PM rebuild your old one and bring that one back then?? whats trans do you have now?? and whats wrong with it??
Haro Sep 15th, 09, 01:32 PM my old one drives but it starts slipping after a few min, rebuilding costs about 800 dollars and i dont have a job atm so thats no really a option,
i was hoping someone could tell if my new (used) one is shot or maybe still good, all i know is it came out of a 85 caprice that was wrecked.
SPARKY69 Sep 15th, 09, 01:33 PM What are you putting it in??..i would at least try that one! does it smell burnt??
Haro Sep 15th, 09, 01:38 PM im putting it in a 83 camaro, it didnt smell burnt to me just brown color. since i already have it here i might try to put it in tomarrow.
SPARKY69 Sep 15th, 09, 01:49 PM just put it in after you change the filter and fluid..im guessing, but it should be ok if its not burnt smelling..ive had them brown with old fluid and they have been fine!!
Calpantera Sep 15th, 09, 04:18 PM Its not that hard to do a trans by yourself, just "benchpress" it in. Also have a cell phone handy in case you get pinned :)
Vette468 Sep 15th, 09, 06:43 PM Im not a Caprice guy but ..does that tranny have the torque arm mounting pad on it..?...if not ,you can weld a tab and mount your Camaros torque arm to the tranny crossmember...thats what I did like 14 years ago to mine ..of course it has a 468 rat and a turbo 400 now...good luck and make sure your TV cable is adjusted properly or your tranny will DIE SOON...:beers:
zdld17 Sep 15th, 09, 08:22 PM Take trans back , get another or refund, go back down the road, Could you even get a 350 or 400 just to get by?
Dgk180 Sep 15th, 09, 09:52 PM not sure if i could even hook up a turbo with the way the cars setup.
Vette468 Sep 16th, 09, 06:59 AM Hey..dont send your car back in time to the DARK AGES you all- ready have the tranny that bolts right up..changing to a turbo 350 or turbo 400 is really going back to the "dinasour days" ..with the lower first gear and "engine saving""gas saving" -OVERDRIVE the 700r4 is a no brainer ,,no need to fabricate any EXTENSION on your crossmember-no need to---- BUY A NEW SHIFTER---- and no need to GET A LONGER DRIVESHAFT "the 700r4 being longer than a turbo 350-400" ,,,just find a way to mount your TORQUE ARM....and be DONE... aaahh -OVERDRIVE:yes:
now if later on you "DOUBLE YOUR HORSEPOWER !! put the th-400 in....
SPARKY69 Sep 16th, 09, 07:01 AM Its not that hard to do a trans by yourself, just "benchpress" it in. Also have a cell phone handy in case you get pinned :)dont forget the floor jacks!!:hurray:
arocars Sep 18th, 09, 01:38 PM Brown fluid and metal chips are signs of transmission failure. I recommend you return the transmission asap. No one is going to want it back after you've installed it. You still wont have a functional trans and you'll be out $217. Keep looking for a good one. Look on Craigslist, they're on there all time.
