: How much clearance for air cleaner
jkaufman Sep 16th, 09, 10:30 AM This weekend I will be reinstalling my freshly rebuilt 327 into my 67 Camaro. I'm getting the last of my parts together and have a question about clearance for an air cleaner. I'm looking at the 14" K&N open-air element. What's the maximum clearance with an Edelbrock RPM Dual-plane Air Gap intake? I would just measure myself, but the engine's not in the car yet and I figured someone else out there must have this intake on a 2-bolt small block. :)
Thanks!
Aaron67 Sep 16th, 09, 10:39 AM Jeff,
I've got the Performer RPM on my small block. should be same height as an RPM air gap. with my edelbrock 600 i require a drop base air cleaner and a 2" tall air cleaner. could get away with a 2 1/2" air cleaner, but the base i have requires an additional 1/2" spacer to clear the choke on my carb. I have maybe 1/2" between air cleaner lid and hood insulation.
i would say with a drop base air cleaner that's made to fit your holley, a 2 1/2" or maybe even 3" tall air cleaner is probably doable, depending on the amount of drop in the base. don't know if any of this helps. probably not because we're talking two different carbs here.
jkaufman Sep 16th, 09, 11:27 AM Right. I forgot to mention I got the 670 Holley S.A.
How much is your drop? The K&Ns look like they come with either .875" or 1.25" drop.
The total height for the 2.25" tall K&N without the drop is 3.875" (it's actually raised .5625") while the .875" and 1.25" drops are 3.125" and 2.75" high, respectively, for a 3" cleaner.
Should I be concerned about HEI clearance with a drop-base air cleaner?
Aaron67 Sep 16th, 09, 11:53 AM you have to limit the diameter to keep from hitting the HEI. I think my air cleaner is 13" diameter. No problems at all. Ran a 14" cleaner for a while (I forget), it was tight, the forward spark plug wires on the cap were pressed against it. going off memory, don't take those numbers to the bank. I'd have to measure the drop when I get home tonight.
jkaufman Sep 16th, 09, 01:48 PM I also forgot to mention I have a cowl induction hood (previous owner put that on when it was painted), so how much extra clearance does that typically give? I also read on another thread that the drop-base may interfere with a dual-feed line... Is that true even if the inlets are angled downward? Maybe with the extra clearance, I can get away without having to do a drop-base...
Steptoe Sep 16th, 09, 02:01 PM If asking "how much clearanced neeed?"
I have impco 425 and the cleaner top its dirctly n the top of the 'carb' with stuff all...well enough so after a couple weeks of daily driving the paint is worn off the under side of the hood where the hold down spinner is...
After 20yrs like this there is no dent in the hood, just worn paint spot.
RSCopo Sep 16th, 09, 02:24 PM Hi Jeff. On my 69 with a factory cowl -induction hood, I can run a 1 1/4 inch drop base open air cleaner with up to a 14x4 inch filter with no issues. This is on a 427, also. BTW, my car picks up over a half a tenth of a second with the factory air cleaner sealed to the hood over a 14-inch open element. Try to seal whatever you use to the hood! Hope this helps.
Fred Ficarra Sep 16th, 09, 02:33 PM Ducted hood?! Jeff, no sweat. Just get one. Here's my BBC with a K&N 4" element that fits a GM air cleaner and never touches the ducted hood. I don't run HEI though but I run Retrotek FI and it's the same height as a Holley. Also a 69 BBC sits an inch to the passenger side and still doesn't hit.

jkaufman Sep 16th, 09, 02:37 PM Thanks for the info, guys! So, maybe to make sure I clear the HEI, I should get a flat-base offset (1.25" forward) setup with maybe a 3" high filter?
Aaron67 Sep 16th, 09, 02:46 PM Cowl hood changes things... i've got a flat hood. Look up "cake pan" air cleaner here in the forums for a DIY true cowl induction setup. Saw it in person, actually a pretty clean looking setup.

Well I'm not looking to make the cowl hood actually function. That was never in my plans. In fact, whenever the car gets repainted in the future, I plan on putting the flat hood back on it and selling the cowl hood. Who knows... I could change my mind down the road. But, either way, my immediate future does not include making the cowl induction work.
Strick Sep 16th, 09, 10:40 PM I have a 750 double pump with cowl hood (tall motor mounts) and use a Summit drop base 14" - fits perfect. I actually get a bit of benefit from the cowl hood recess where the air cleaner fits (cool air).

So, there is no interference with your dual feed lines? Do you have HEI?
Steiner Sep 21st, 09, 11:37 PM I have a small block, HEI, Performer RPM intake, 670 Street Avenger, and non-functional cowl hood. Air cleaner setup is a flat base 14" filter assembly, 2" K&N, and K&N filter topper. I think I've got right at an inch of room +/- a hair from the top of the filter topper to the hood. Some of what they call "flat base" air cleaner bottoms are actually about a 3/4" rise which is what mine is. Going to a 3" filter would've put the spinner into the hood so that's why I use the topper as it is supposed to be good for an additional 500cfm potential. I figured it would also be good to have with the short air filter while still running a choke tower.
All in all, it clears the hood, HEI, carb linkage, and carb feed fine. Something like the kit linked below would probably work pretty well. Heck, it's been so long since I bought mine that this may actually be it but for some reason it seems like I bought the topper seperate.
