: Looking For Butternut Yellow
RonM Sep 16th, 09, 04:43 PM The time has come to paint the '68' back to the original butternut yellow and I need help getting the correct paint. My bodyman tells me it can't be mixed like the factory did because of solids such as lead not being used anymore. So my question is, for a bc/cc paint job what do I need to tell the PPG dealer to get the correct color (paint number, paint formula)? Thanks for any help, RonM.
Sauron67MM Sep 16th, 09, 04:51 PM You tell them it's PPG code 81500. They will get a direct mix or an offset from the PPG library. It can't be mixed like the factory did it because it's not lacquer. And today's lacquers are not like those of 40 years ago.

The old PPG/Ditzler code was 81500.
Here is a link to a color chip library:

67 RSS Sep 16th, 09, 06:08 PM I called PPG at 1-800-647-6050 and was faxed back a report. Press 1 for english and follow the prompts :). If you want that you'll need a fax number for yourself or body shop etc..
They put their analyzer on a chip from their library (I'm told) and produce the color mix- I believe it is called a profit (profet?) report named after their system.
The color was also named mellow yellow as well as several other catchy names...
I think you can also mail order paint from the link Bob provided above.
Mav68erick Sep 16th, 09, 06:28 PM Press 1 for English press 2 if your in the country illegally and getting ready to collect social security that most young americans will never see Press 5 to replay your options.
guess my car was butterball yellow to, the capri cream looks better imo

Interesting. I've talked to them many times and recently for about 25 minutes. I was in collision for 25 years and all paints were mixed on our DBU system or locally if we wanted DBC.
The PPG library will give you a direct mix or an offset code like I said. That's what they are there for. Or you can do the same for any brand you want. No need to order paint but TCP Global is a good source for people unfamiliar with the business.

We mixed it locally..DBC me thinks..maybe I wasn't clear above?
They provided the elements of the mix via fax. I wasn't able to determine that from the library for 81500.
Nonetheless a very desirable color :D

You were. I wanted to support the fact that the acquisition of paint colors is not as daunting as many think. PPG is quite helpful obtaining info for customers.
RonM Sep 17th, 09, 02:15 PM Thanks guys for the info. so far. I called the 1-800 number and was told 81500 was a single stage paint and that I needed 81510 for a bc/cc paint job which is supposed to be close to butternut yellow. The paint on the Corvette pictured above is beautiful, that is exactly what I'm looking for. I just need the paint code or formula that was used. Thanks again for any help, RonM.
67 RSS Sep 17th, 09, 02:52 PM Maybe thats why they offered me a profet? Can you ask for that? They quickly came to that conclsuion when I chatted with them..Not sure about the 81510..
A couple of shots of my car

I have the fax they sent me, but thought you might be more comfortable getting your own in the event there was any question on the color..
RonM Sep 18th, 09, 04:33 AM Nice looking Camaro Lane. I went to the Color Chip Library and came up with PPG-DBC-SC-GL for the base and PPG Kit-2021-GL for the clear/hardener. I don't know why the local PPG dealer can't come up with this info. maybe I'm missing something, not being a painter. Anyway is this the paint and clear I would need for a butternut yellow bc/cc paint job. Thanks for any help, RonM.
Brandan Sep 18th, 09, 09:58 AM I just looked up my paint sheet for my PPG painted butternut yellow convertible and it was 81500. It was bc/cc. Hope it helps

Nice car Brandan, I'd like to see what is on your paint sheet. My painter just got back from the PPG dealer where he was told the closest they could come to a bc/cc butternut yellow would be a color called Jamaican yellow. He got a sample of it and a sample of mellow yellow that he is going to spray on a test panel. I still would like butternut yellow, I can't believe what a pain this is being. Thanks for any help, RonM.

The tints in the origional lacquer paint are not the same as today's tints. That's why there are direct mixes and offsets. It can be tinted to match but that depends on the person on the system and their ability to match colors and their willingness to do so. Here is a taste of the industry. Comprehension of color theory is required to match colors. https://corporateportal.ppg.com/NA/Refinish/PPGRefinish/4-0-ColorTools/4-3-Tools/4-3-1-Collision/EN/030_Tint
And you need a dead on color sample for comparison to which you are trying to match. Then add the approriate colors under full spectrum bulbs to achieve your target color. PPG will pull a color that the computer will match as close as possible without human manipulation.
Unless Brandan has the formula simply having the GM code 81500 means nothing.
Brandan Sep 18th, 09, 09:07 PM Ron check your PM's:D
RonM Sep 19th, 09, 12:59 PM Well I certainly got an education about automotive paint the last few days. First off thanks to everyone for the help and advice, I certainly wanted to get it right the first time. I have some of the original paint on the car by the quarter windows under the interior rear side panels which are out of the car. The PPG dealer is going to come to my house to take some pictures (I guess that is a profet) of the original paint to match it. Thanks again for the help, RonM.
Brandan Sep 19th, 09, 08:59 PM Ron did you check your PM'S? I sent you some very important information that I think you will find will come in handy.
Brandan-
shoddy_F-body Sep 19th, 09, 09:08 PM I shot an original butternut yellow car with the Dupont camera (chromavision) and it came back with a color called wheat yellow or something like that. It was a perfect match.

Yes Brandan and thank you. At about the same time my painter determined the original paint that was covered by the rear side panels since the car was new, could be used to make a match. Yesterday he made an appointment with the local PPG dealer to come to my house to shoot a picture. I will also pass along your info. to my painter and we'll go from there. Ron

That's why we pulled gas caps and sent them to the supplier. You'll see them in their mixing room.

CamarosRus Sep 22nd, 09, 09:44 PM Here some misc pics of my 69' "COPO" (recreation)..........................
For all the complimentary talk on this thread, it wasnt (and still isnt) a very popular color in 69'. I'm thinking that 1% of 69 Camaros were B.Y. ?????
My car below is currently under repair to improve the body condition. I may be changing the color again to ????? , as the X-11 trim tag color is Frost Green !!!!!!!!!!

RonM Sep 27th, 09, 01:43 PM Just to bring you guys up to date I finally got the paint mixed. The PPG dealer came to my house and took a prophet on the car, but that did'nt work out too well. The area wasn't large enough for the camera and it was probably contaminated with overspray from me painting the floor panels and package tray, it looked too pale. So what we ended up doing was getting a sample of the Omni butternut yellow, spraying a test panel and then taking a prophet of it which was used to mix it up in DBU. RonM
rjp73 Sep 27th, 09, 02:54 PM I used the Omni BC paint on mine.

Your car looks great Ralph, going with DBU was my painter's call. Ron
boonstein Sep 28th, 09, 07:18 AM I feel so lucky, I have never ask my paint supplier for a color SHE couldn't make.
K and K Sep 28th, 09, 10:01 PM All that your going through makes me feel bad that my 67 is originally a YY car but has not been Butternut for years.
