: TH350 cable linkage issue/inquiry - please help!
Camaro1969 Sep 16th, 09, 04:50 PM Does anyone have a diagram or explain to me how to connect a th350 trans? from the shifter, the cable from the horseshoe comes down to the side of the trans, and connects with a pin, but on the diagram, there is these other parts, such as a rod, that connects to the trans, with the linkage and pin, and also somethign is connected to the side of the frame? can someone show me a picture? or do i just connect the cable to the trans, and thats it?
freezined Sep 16th, 09, 05:37 PM Your cable from the horseshoe to the tranny shifts your gears. The other parts you are explaining sounds like the linkage lock (for lack of better word) to prevent the tranny being moved out of park when the ign key is turned off
Everett#2390 Sep 16th, 09, 06:37 PM As freezined suggested, its a lockout rod and on a '69 and later, and should be connected to the steering column so the key can be removed when ignition is locked.
Its connection to the steering column also activates the neutral safety switch and reverse lights as both of these functions are on the same switch on top of the column at the firewall.
Sorry, I don't have a picture.
BPOS Sep 16th, 09, 06:54 PM Above is correct. Well - mostly.(Sorry Everett!) The console shifted automatics have the neutral safety switch and backup light switch connected to the horseshoe shifter (1969) so removal of the ignition lockout feature doesn't affect those.
Many headers interfere with the ign lockout feature. Mine is gone.

I think im going to have header issues, and yes, i think it is this:

but this is for a 4 speed?
MAIN question, is this necessary, and what are the CONS of not having it!?

Not having the lockout rod installed, you would still have to permanently affix after pulling up on the column arm at the engine side of the column so you could lock the tumbler and pull out the key, I think.
Camaro1969 Sep 16th, 09, 07:55 PM my key comes out, once i have lined up the key to the notch on the column
Everett#2390 Sep 16th, 09, 07:58 PM Cool!
Camaro1969 Sep 16th, 09, 10:24 PM so it is necessary to have it linked to the bottom of the steering column, i have after market headers and feel its gonna be a problem
Everett#2390 Sep 17th, 09, 04:17 AM If the ignition switch and steering column work as normal without the lockout rod attached, don't worry about putting it back in.

I think you are correct. It's been almost 35 years since i had a Camaro with headers but I think I wired mine up to avoid haveing to twist the column every time I wnated the key out.

Don't forget the cable mounting bracket that bolts to the trans to hold that end of the cable.
