: Salvage yards in Texas or Arizona
tgifford5 Sep 16th, 09, 05:38 PM I will be doing body and paint work on my 69 camaro this winter. My father-in-law has a body shop. He told me to do some checking and see if there were any salvage yards that carried first gen. camaros to use factory sheet metal. Does anyone out there know of any yards that might carry some camaro parts? My areas of concern on my camaro are of coarse around the rear window since mine was an original vinyl top.

You do know what year it is currently right? Lol! Contact Belairbob. Or you would have to buy a shell from someone who is scrapping one. The days where a salvage yard would have a first-gen Camaro are looooooooooong gone.
Vintage 68 Sep 16th, 09, 05:51 PM Hummm - wrecking yards with first gen parts ... nope, haven't seen one in years :noway:
J/K Ted - but, you can probably find new replacement pieces, for the areas you discribed, that area in much better condition than 90%+ of the stuff you'd still be able to find in any wrecking yard at this point.
Any left-over 1st gens I do come across anymore in these places are mere hulks that don't really have a good part left on them - always make me wonder why they keep it there...
Try contacting someone like "BelAir Bob" or other site sponsors and see what they're appraisal of the a given replacement part you'd need is - I'd bet you can get a good idea from most of them on if using a salvaged part or buying a 'repop' part would be better for you in the long run.
Wish you luck in your searches and work
(ps: I didn't see the above reply before I started mine...)
tgifford5 Sep 16th, 09, 06:08 PM Just doing some homework and seeing what my options are. I have read many a post where guys are having to rework even the new pop stuff.
6781camaro Sep 16th, 09, 06:46 PM Sorry if I was a little blunt in my reply, but trying to find a first-gen Camaro in a salvage yard is like finding a hen's tooth in many states that I've looked in.
Sometimes I imagine what it would have been like to live back in the early 70's as a teenager searching through the yards. That site must have been amazing....

draddog69 Sep 16th, 09, 07:38 PM If you find one it will probably look like mine did.

It did not have many usable parts.
cowboybob Sep 17th, 09, 07:42 AM There is a salvage yard just west of Weatherford, OK (north side of I-40) that has three 69's and a couple of 68's (I think). I don't remember the name of the place, but I was just out there about 3 years ago. The cars were pretty well stripped, but there may have been some usable body parts/panels. I actually considered buying one of the shells, but the owner thought it was made of gold.
okiemark Sep 17th, 09, 08:45 AM Bob, I know that yard. You can bet your bottom dollar nothing's left on those 1st Gens. Of course, if you're gonna drive all the way out there, might as well go on to Amarillo and test your manhood at that "eat the whole steak, and you don't pay" steak house. I think it's right off 1-40.
purecam Sep 17th, 09, 08:50 AM There used to be one here in Tulsa, but that was back in the mid 80's... I hear that the yard is still there, but who knows...
okiemark Sep 17th, 09, 08:58 AM Jay, isn't there one right off the highway, the main road going into Tulsa when you get off the turnpike?

Here's a small yard in Texas. Not much left, though. What do you need?
fastfreddy Sep 17th, 09, 09:47 AM The owner said he would sell all.
IDS_Bill Sep 17th, 09, 09:49 AM There was one people used to talk about in Phoenix but I work right near it and there isn't anything First Gen left there. Mostly some 50's rustbuckets.
okiemark Sep 17th, 09, 09:59 AM check out the cool '70s stance of that closest 68. love that!
fastfreddy Sep 17th, 09, 10:06 AM They're actually up on wood blocks.

I bought a complete 67 Camaro RS, deluxe interior from a hidden junkyard from the 20's 4 years ago. It was popped lightly in the left front, last reg 1982. The gut is in my car now. Hundreds of cars. Also there now is a stripped 68 Camaro. 1 '70 Charger taken out 2 years ago. And there was an orange Judge under two cars with a complete drivetrain. Mustang notchbacks too. I know where there is another 69 in a boneyard also. And a phone call to a friend and a little work can find more. So they are out there.

They are in north Phoenix - I've been out there a few times - they always seem to have a couple of first gen's sitting around. They are expensive but they have lots of parts - worth a call perhaps.

WOW! Looks like I'm movin' to Texas! That's truly incredible to see. In Florida, you would have to turn back the clock 20 years to find that.
Why wouldn't someone buy them all and rebuild the titles? I would if I had the space.

The only first-gen car in a Florida junkyard today is a first-gen Saturn. :D

This place has been owned for generations.
The present land descendent has an auto business that operates as a hobby, not a need. Very little interest in cars and watching things rot does not bother him. There are places up north in the woods you have to hunt for and barns full of cars with disinterested owners or abandoned. My friend went up blind on a casual mission to flatbed something home. Brought home another Charger that was going to scrap. But it was far from scrap and restorable. Mopar is good coin. Could go get more but has more than enough for a comfortable retirement fund. You could bring home a car or two a month if you wanted. The rural locals know where things are and have no interest in doing anything with them. "Been there-done that" type of thing.

Speaking of Mopar, I've been looking at an all complete blue '69 Superbee with 383 and ramcharger hood and breather. Been sitting for a looong time. What do you think it's worth? Yea it's got rust, but not the northern kind.
Sauron67MM Sep 17th, 09, 06:29 PM Not sure, depends on condition. I'm not highly Mopar knowledgeable, friend is. Bought many starting 20 years ago and kept quite a few and sold junk 440 six packs, etc. and bought restored cars from the profit. Use the 383 Super Bee as starting point of 25-35 restored and go from that. Market is down across the board. But one should never pass on a Mopar for the right money. Done now, wrong forum.

This place is just north of Denton, TX. Their yard is HUGE. They specialize in classic / older vehicles-but I warn you. They are proud of their inventory. You can deal them down, but when I bought the glove box door for my 63 C10, they wanted 85.00.
I ended up talking them down to 40, but they still will gouge you on pricing. If it is sheet metal you are looking for, this is not the place. As you walk through the yard you start wondering if your last tetanus shot is still good!
But it is huge...if you have google earth, put in these coordinates:
33°18'36.42"N x 97°10'53.34"W
It is about a 1/2 mile wide and a 1/4 mile deep.

That's good to know. It's real and original, though somewhat rough. I'm working on a 6k price when 5 didn't work. She's an older tempermental lady. It is her deceased son's car. Rust issues around here is kinda limited but you know about those rear glass issues.

up on blocks... that's what I mean, most of my cars in the '70's were up on blocks!
