Hi there,

I've got an 67 SS 396 machine with a 12 bolt rear.

I looked at the rear drum brakes the other to check them and found they don't have the self adjusters in them. It has the roller "gear wheel" to manually adjust them.

Did the 67s come without the self adjusters?

Thanks,

Gordon

63 and later cars came with self adjusters. Many of the brake hardware manufacturers sold kits (years ago) to eliminate them though.

The "star" wheel IS the self adjusters. There is a pawl that moves the star wheel when brakes are applied with enough lining wear.

Right....I'm getting my terminilogy straight, thanks. I've got the star wheel, but not the pawl...I'll check against my AIM book to see what other little pieces might be missing.

I don't think a kit is required to eliminate the self adjust just leave out a few parts.Upon closer examination I think it would be best to replace the rear spring with a longer one. I think you need the 6 parts in the pic to put the self adjust back on. you might also need a cup that goes under the hold down spring.(not shown)
