I may have a line on a 9 in Ford rear end. It is out of a 73 Mustang with a 302 and a 3spd. I don't know how to tell if it is a 9 in or a 8.8 in. I do have some numbers off the tag, but I don't have them handy right now, and can post them later if anyone wants the letters and numbers off the tag. I can pick it up for $100. How can I tell if is posi, without turning the wheels?

First, the '73 Mustang didn't have a 8.8. They didn't get those untill '86. The '73 had a 8 or 9 inch rear end. The tag will tell you everything about it. There are 2 rows of numbers and letters on the tag. The top row is useless to you. The bottom row has your information on it. The first numbers next to the bolt hole are the gear ratio. It will be something like 3 .50 and then the next number is the ring gear diameter. This will be either a 8 for the 8 inch or a 9 for the 9 inch. If there is a L between the first and second number of the gear ratio then it has the Traction Lock limited slip differential. It will look like 3L.50 for a 3.50 gear with Traction Lock.
