I want to mock everything up to check my clearances before I balance everything on my new motor. I have scat I-beams with cap screws and cant get the caps off. Do you use a bench vise to hold the cap (with soft jaws)while separating it from the rod? Have any of you tried the proform rod splitting tool? If so, can you use it with bearings in the rod?
Thanks,
Doc

I use a rod vise; remove the bolts, slide the cap end into the vise, and gently wiggle them free by pulling on the rod itself. Your way would be fine as long as the soft jaws hold them securely without gouging them. My aluminum vise inserts are kind of "wiggly". I haven't seen the rod splitting tool you mentioned but if it pushes on the bearings to split it I would think it would easily damage them.

Doc,
On cap screw rods, you can usually take a plastic hammer and tap the cap sideways and it will come off the dowels pretty easy. On the real tough ones, I put the cap in the rod vise like Jody said.
I have the Eagle rod parting tool and it would probably work ok on the cap screw rods, but to be honest with you it was a waste of money for the normal "through bolt" type rods.
