I've not dealt with them, but I've got to believe there are engine builders in Ohio who could put any of those engines together for nearly the same price. There's nothing like being able to drive across town to have an issue addressed face-to-face rather than making a long distance call.

My current 383 has studs for the heads. Some of them didn't get sealed properly and the engine was smoking. I drove over to the engine builder's shop, he kept the car for one day and resealed and retorqued the studs. Problem fixed, no delay, no angst.

I have bought a 383 advertised 440hp from them in 2003. I do know they don't dyno each engine just the model they are replicating. I feel Steve and Doug do a great job and customer service is good. I also believe there is nothing better than doing it yourself. I upgraded the above engine with ported heads and intake bigger cam etc.. and felt the experiecence a good one. If not capable of putting whole engine then buy shortblock and assemble top end. But if time constraints are issue then all means buy a crate engine. Regardless I had no issues and I was always able to get a response when calling them or had my own suggestions, again they are from New Jersey and you can't just hop across town. Good Luck

the head mechanic is really anal about detail etc.

I can't offer any direct experience, but I research pretty much every builder that I run across on this site that I haven't heard of because I'm in the market for a crate engine.

Here's what fifteen minutes turned up on them. I don't have a view one way or the other and this is just what was found with a little searching:
They host eight different websites linking to the same main site and engines.
Not an accredited BBB business although one of the sites displays the BBB seal.
However, no complaints through the BBB site but still a "no rating" rating.
Almost nothing on Google.

I personally don't put any stock in magazine articles, television appearances, or the like. An almost local builder that I was just about ready to buy from has been featured a half dozen times in major publications but has a BBB rating of "F". I've since found another fairly local builder with an A+ rating. I consider local within a two hour drive though. Living in Atlanta for so long kinda did that to me.

builds the best custom engines available.....I've got one of his 468's between the fenders of my '69  :D :thumbsup:.

Also in Dayton is famed drag racer Ohio George Montgomery's Speed Shop
www.georgesspeedshop.com (http://www.georgesspeedshop.com)
I've had the pleasure to meet Mr. Montgomery at his speed shop...it was like taking a trip back in time seeing all of the old pictures on the wall and the racing trophies in the trophy case.

The youtube videos they have are cool, product looks as good as it could without seeing it face to face, and the dude in the vids sounds and looks like Joe Pesci!
