I will be installing sound dampener very soon and was wondering if I should still install the firewall pad? I was thinking if you had the foil back showing would the carpet cover far enough up to hide it. I'm still trying to decide which dampner to use. I know that subject has been beat here to death. :D

Thanks for any input. :beers::beers:

scott,

yes you do want to re-install the firewall pad. do a search for firewall pad as there were one or two companies whose product had less fitment issues then others.

contrary to majority opinion, i chose hashmat, http://www.hushmat.com/. as you stated there is a ton of info on this subject so grab yourself a cold beverage, kick back, read and good luck with your decision.

I recommend the deluxe pad from National Parts Depot.

I order the cheaper one and threw it away.

The NPD pad is pricey but well worth it.

I used secondskin and Rick's firewall mat. I have not put the carpet in yet, but I will just paint the foil where it shows. The cheaper firewall mat is not as long as it need to be, so if you put the heater in first (like I did) you will not be close on the cutouts on the drivers side. I ended up cutting and glueing the pad to fit. :(

Guys,
Thanks for the info.
I have everything removed from the interior (heater box, steering column) everything. Is there an order on how to install sound deadner, firewall pad, and then things that bolt to the inner firewall?

I guess NPD pad it is.

Thanks for any advice!

Guess I'll use mine as a backing for the trunk divider or under the rear seat and buy a new one for up front then.

I was able to install the cheaper pad and it turned out great. What you have to do is start in the middle of the firewall and work your way to the sides. After it is installed you can only see maybe 2" below the heater box.
If I were you and had the cheap pad on hand I would try to install it before buying the $140.00 one.

Thanks Roger!
I have tried to use the cheaper one several times in the past and as I have told a fellow T/C member.....did a lot of cussing and fussing, pulled it out of the car, threw it out of the garage and then kicked all the way down the driveway to the trash can!
Now with that having been said...I never tried to start from the center, I started by the heater box and by the time I got to the drivers side...well that is when the fight began. :boxing:
I don't have either pad at this moment...Hmmmm.....Maybe I will try the cheap one and see how it goes using your install method. It has been a few years since I tried one and they didn't have instructions.:o

I used the cheap firewall pad from NPD. The biggest pain in the rear was that all cutouts for fusebox, heater box, etc.... weren't cut very well. Some time with a razor cleaned up the openings. As long as you have plenty of the plastic push clips to hold it up it can be made to work fairly well. It is a bit of a pain, but then again I'll endure it to save a few $$$ haha.

I am not saying it was easy but I put the center retainers in first. I think there were three and they are not exactly center but the ones close to center. Then the heater box has those studs on it that go through the firewall. I made sure the pad was on those studs and pushed it to the right until the studs found their holes. It helps if you have help under the hood giving you some direction. Then I stretched it to the left and made it go around the fuse panel and e-brake cable.

I agree with RogerH. I just installed the cheaper pad last weekend and started in the middle and worked my way out board. To eliminate the fight of the roll-up set the pad had, I used a bunch of old bolts and j-clip nuts just to hold the pad in place for a couple of days so the pad would take a set to its installed position. Particularly around the heater box hole. When I went to install the heater box and removed the temp bolts the pad stayed by itself maintaining the alignment for the heater box studs. The plastic christmas trees that came with the pad are crap. I purchased from NPD the 4 rubber OE style retainer plugs..much better.

Thanks for the info.
I was up at Fall Carlisle yesterday and bought one of the cheaper pads. I think I will start in the middle and work my way to the drivers side first as this is the hardest part to get everything to fit.

Thanks :beers:
