I was wondering if this tag is real and if someone could help decode it for me. My friend just bought this car and it is upposed to be a Z/28. The car is just a shell with a lot of body panels replaced so I have no other way of verifying it. Thanks,

Clint

Looks like the real deal. Built the fourth week March of 69, LeMans Blue with black standard interior. Body number is in line with the build date. What is the VIN?

... Built the fourth week of 69......

Built the 4th week of March, if I read the number as "3". The factory sure did a clean job of filling the rivet holes.

I was wondering the same things on the rivets holes. It's almost like rivets do not have the centers punched out.

Thanks for the help so far,

Clint

The rivets look like they are replacements that havent been punched. Tag may have been off the car or added to this body.:(

Tag has been off that body. Sold on Ebay in July of 2008 out of Beaver Dam, WI for $6150

Ebay seller was ryans_auto

Buyer was mjabl (cannon falls,mn)

Description: You are bidding on a 1969 chevrolet camaro X77 Z28 real deal. in need of a complete restroation.
the motor and transmission are gone. needs trunk back frame rails, complete rocker panels. the floors have been
repaired with pans, Has front disc brakes still intact. Has 10 bolt rear end.

This is the auction and what it looked like then. the tag is real and it had the original rivets and putty in the pics from the auction....

How do you know the tag has been off the body? Clint says the car has had a lot of body panels replaced. Could be the buyer of the ebay auction replaced the panels and then sold it.

Never mind. Now that you've posted the picture I can see what you mean.

I guess take a look at the rivets in the pics above and decide for yourself.

Couldn't you also check for speedometer cable piercing location in firewall? Whether or not 4 speed?

The rivets do not look correct to me either. You can see on the left side of the tag where it appears that someone pryed it off.

The trim tag data "03D" and "292595" line up very well with the VIN number 124379N620128. I agree that the trim tag may have been removed from the firewall at some point, but it still seems very likely that the trim tag was originally paired with that VIN.

I would check to see if the hidden VIN stamped into the cowl matches the VIN plate.

If the VIN tag and cowl tag is still on the same body. In todays world you never assume anything.

I have a different pic of the tag, from 2005. From ebay I believe.
Note the wiper bolt is broken in this one and the hanger is welded on. Either the whole upper cowl was replaced or it's a new body.

If it is just a shell, and nothing else ( rear, engine, trany...) then build what you want, its not a Z anymore, its just a Camaro.

Why is it that some people use sandpaper or something else highly abrasive to make the numbers show up on trim tags?

As Ron White would say "You can't fix stupid".

Interesting. That means there's a bunch of ZL1's out there that aren't really ZL1's, just plain Camaros, since they didn't have any drivetrain left......
The market seems to value them like they are ZL1's though, hmmmm.

I agree with Kurt.

Even if most or all of the drivetrain is missing and there is a good verified paper trail to a rare car, it still is what it was. Missing parts or not, if it can be documented, then it's still a Z (or ZL11, Yenko or whatever).

I hope this was not one where the tags were moved to a different body though. That is fraud and illegal.
