View Full Version : Scat crank and rods
69CamaroRacer Aug 20th, 01, 05:56 AM What do u guys think about the scat 9000 series crank and rods. I am planning on building a 383 with around 450hp and 500lbs. I like the fact that the crank is so affordable and i have heard that they are very strong. Any info u can give will help thanks

67RS502 Aug 20th, 01, 06:09 AM I've got the Scat stroker kit for the 383 I'm building, it has the 9000 cast steel crank, 4340 rods, and SRP pistons. My car is a stick so I wasnt sure if a cast crank was the right choice. Then I asked one of my friend what crank he had in his LT1 383, and he said he has the Scat 9000 cast crank. Its a 95 Z28, 383, ported heads, solid roller and 6-spd. The car dynoed at 440rwhp, and runs 11.50s on motor and 10.50 with a 150 shop of NOS. Well that answered my question as far as the crank being strong enough for my daily driver, 383 which will never see spray. Hope that helps http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

69CamaroRacer Aug 20th, 01, 06:15 PM That sounds like a good combo u have there with the scat crank and 4340 Rods and srp pistons ... how much did it run u ?? did u buy it as a kit?? if so where from?

67RS502 Aug 21st, 01, 08:13 AM I got it though a speed shop around here, he gives me a discount, I paid $960 for the kit.
But I'm guessing anyone should be able to get it for a little over a grand, say $1100 - 1200. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Wes V Aug 22nd, 01, 08:09 AM I've also been interested in building a 383 with this "kit".
It can be purchased through Sallee for $949.

What I find real interesting is that it seems to be an internally balanced set-up and wouldn't requrire the 400 engines harmonic balancer or flex plate (flywheel). An internally balanced engine should have better bearing life.
My question on doing one would be if the Vortec heads would be a good addition (what with the fact that they are available at a killer price) and what cam would be good for a low RPM / street motor.

CarlC Aug 22nd, 01, 08:56 AM Wes,
Take a close look at the alternator photo with the engine on the stand. This is the new Red Beast engine with a similar Scat setup. 406, 6" rod, SRP reverse dome, cast steel crank, GM Fastburn heads. It's internally balanced.
David Pozzi and I talked to Tom Leib, President of Scat, at the 2000 SEMA show. The day before the show I ordered the rotating assembly from them but still had some questions reguarding cast steel reliability. According to Tom the cast steel version is reliable in 550 hp sprint cars using a non-fluid type damper.
I have not received a definative answer if the Vortec or Fastburn head would be affected by the larger 4.155" bore. Gary at GMPP has some interesting information on the Chevelle and Sallee board concerning 383's and this style of head. Porting the combustion chamber on these heads is supposed to be a no-no but does that include unshrouding the valve?
Though it was more expensive I bought directly from Scat. The technical service was good and I got a tour of the manufacturing facility. They can also balance the whole enchillada for you. They are just over the hill from you, not too far from LAX.

Wes V Aug 22nd, 01, 05:40 PM Carl;
I should have known that you "hang" with David Pozzi. It would be funny to find out that we bumped shoulders at SEMA!!! (I was the bald guy there)
I'm I correct that the Scat is "internally" balanced?
I'm also under the impression that the "fast burn" heads cost almost twice the cost of the Vortecs. If this is true, how and when is it justified? (not questioning your judgment!)
I'm thinking of a low RPM, high torque type engine.
Do the "fast burn" heads also require a "vortec" style intake manifold? (if they didn't, then the total price difference to change over wouldn't be that bad)

CarlC Aug 22nd, 01, 06:13 PM We'll be there again this year. How about a TC sponsored happy hour at the Hilton? http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
If memory serves the 6" rod version can be internally balanced but not the 5.7". I wanted (and Tom recommended) a 6" rod so internal balance was an added bonus. I had Scat supply the rotating assembly + bearings + rings + balance.
The Fastburn is drilled for standard intakes but there is a lot of miss-match since the port is raised. A new Edlebrock RPM Vortec is $80 more than a standard RPM so in the big scheme of things it's not much. I got a deal I could not refuse on the Fastburns or else AFR's would be in their place. If you do go the Vortec route you may want to spend the money on a Vortec type intake just becasue of the gaskets. They are outstanding. You're welcome to come check them out.
The cast iron Vortec would be great for a torque generator. Valve lift is limited to somewhere around 0.470" but that's fine for low rpm torque. That's what they were made for.
