: Clovis New Mexico anyone?
wiskeesour Oct 7th, 09, 12:51 PM Anyone in or close to Clovis, New Mexico? Id like to find out a little about the area. Ive been hired by a company out there and am anxious to get back to work and told them I was ready when they were.
Is it a good town? Wheres the 'bad' part of town? Is there things for my children to do? Is there local Camaro clubs? Race tracks? Car shows?
How about cost of living?
We are going to rent a house and share it with a good friend of mine. Him and his wife and their little girl will stay with us til we decide to buy or I have to move due to the job moving, deploying and/or going on a detachment.
I..we appreciate the help guys.

Eric Kammerer Oct 7th, 09, 02:19 PM Clovis is home to Cannon AFB, so you might get some good info off the Cannon website: http://www.cannon.af.mil/newcomers.asp
http://www.cityofclovis.org/
Sp68cvert Oct 7th, 09, 02:41 PM have visited there several times, it's a small cattle town within the bible belt, no drinks served in restaurants on Sunday's. The AFB is a big part of the economy for Clovis. You basically have a couple of national restaurants (e.g. Applebees) I would guess the population is about 10-15K? I would also guess that there isn't a camaro club, maybe a hotrod club.
Haven't been there in a few years
Aaron67 Oct 7th, 09, 03:28 PM CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :beers:
Like Eric said, give the AFB a call. You're a veteran, I would imagine they'd give you some guidance if you asked for it. The housing office probably has a list of offbase rental properties that could help in your search, get their # off the website and give 'em a ring.

travis Oct 8th, 09, 03:21 AM Harley, what kind of work do you do? I'm guessing from your stint with L3 (evil company to work for from what I understand) that it is either telecom or transport systems? I might be able to hook you up with something in this neck of the woods if your interested. Are you still in Greenville?

I think Harley's a rotor head. Works on choppers. AFSOC has a Wing there, thats what kept that Base off of BRAC. As a matter of fact it was on BRAC but AFSOC thought it was a great place to put a Spec ops Wing in there.
As i said earlier Harley. Clovis aint the end of the world but you can see it from there.
Good luck on the new job.
Joe Harrison Oct 8th, 09, 12:09 PM From their website, if ou like highschool footbal you might be in the right place!! If this all they can say about the town on the website it sounds pretty stagnet.......everybody has to live someplace....LOL!!!
Welcome to the Clovis, New Mexico website!
Our City, which sprung up as a result of the east-west railroad, was incorporated in 1909 in the heart of a newly developing farming and ranching region in eastern New Mexico. Today, Clovis stands at the gateway to the Land of Enchantment, serving as a strategic location for business and industry to New Mexico and west Texas, and as a hub for a trade area encompassing 100,000 plus people.
Sites of interest near our city include Blackwater Draw, discovered in 1932 by Clovis native A.W. Andersen. This site is internationally recognized for its "Clovis Points", evidencing that Clovis Man found this area an ideal location in prehistoric times. Within the city itself areas of attraction include the Norman Petty Studios on 7th Street, renown world wide as the place where Buddy Holly recorded his hit "Peggy Sue" and many other hits. Roy Orbison also recorded along with Clovis' own Fireballs whose smash hit "Sugar Shack", reached number one in 1963. The city is also extremely proud of the Hillcrest Park Zoo, the second largest zoo in New Mexico.
CUT & PASTE FROM THE WEBSITE:
Clovis serves as home to Cannon Air Force Base "Americas Go To Wing" and a great relationship with the Air Force has developed over the years. Clovis' Committee of Fifty work hard to retain Cannon in the Clovis area and to foster the relationship between the two adjacent communities.
Clovis is home to the Wildcats and is known as the "Home of Champions". Our city employees motto is "Serving Our Community" who work hard to keep Clovis a great place to live and work. So next time you want to visit a great community with a low tax rate, low crime rate, and great people that will greet you with a smile, Clovis is your place to visit or perhaps to live.
wiskeesour Oct 11th, 09, 02:52 AM If it flies, Ive fixed it. Even glued the wings on a few bugs(Funny joke for the SOCOM guys).
Im still in Greenville. Im getting ready to go here in a few weeks. If I dont make it in Clovis, Im gonna call it quits and hang the old work hat up on the table that way the wife can go make my living. (eye roll).
Im kinda looking forward to it and kinda wondering if I should stay here and attend college at Texas A&M. They have a good Criminal Justice program. BUT, I like to work on Choppas and those darn fixed wing things that defy gravity-enter three body gravitational math humor here.
Thanks for the help guys, Ill keep searching and if anyone near there wantws to get together let me know. Ill be ther in a few weeks, Lord willin, the sun comes up and the creek dont rise.
Aaron67 Oct 11th, 09, 01:40 PM Harley, so you DID get the job, they just haven't given you a firm start date yet? Most AFB's have satellite campuses on base for different universities, so you could probably start working on that idea while you're out there.
What company are you going to be working for? Clovis seems to be turning into an Spec Ops hub for the Air Force. Know a few guys from Florida that will likely end up there in a few years.
Vintage 68 Oct 12th, 09, 02:31 PM Harley - glad to hear the job may be forthcoming
Sorry to hear it's in Clovis ;)
I've stayed at the Holiday Inn Express there - but, I don't think it did any good...
I drive through (operative word being "through" except for that one stay :D ) there 2~4 times a year on my way down to near Austin to see my folks - usually on a 28~30hr bonsai-run from the Bay Area to Georgetown, so I don't stop very often...
I guess on the bright side, Lubbock is only a few hours away :hurray:
Of course there's always the boomin' metropolis of Fort Sumner an hour or so west - but once you've seen Billy-the-Kid's grave I think the excitement of the place will fade fast l:)
You're not to far from Albuquerque, Amarillo and even the Midland/Odesa areas, so there are quite a few nice places to visit and places that do have some good 'car-action' going on!
I don't remember the weather ever being 'that bad' in the area - just VERY windy at times
Truthfully, it's good to hear you've found what sounds like a good position :beers:
In this economy and times I'd say just go and do the best job you can and make the best of being there.
If you do find the place not to your liking in a few years, hopefully things will have recovered well enough you can add a good civilian job to your resume and move on
I've been transfered to quite a few plaecs in this world that wouldn't have been my first choice - but I've lived through it and actually enjoy going back to some of them quite often!
Best of luck to you and the family;
John

Have you glued any wings onto something like this? I know you are looking for the job but the Albuquerque Ballon Fiesta, which usually runs the first month of October, may give you a nice get away and reason to stay.
My wife and I love this fauna and just got back. I consider you lucky to be able to have the capacity to relocate.

1968guppy Oct 13th, 09, 08:40 AM Actually, I skipped the basket weaving for extra-credit during hell week. Ha Ha Ha Ha.
The week before we left on this three day vacation was shear hell. The trip was almost canceled because of the job hassles, baby sitter hassles, and money hassles. We actually had to cancel twice and rebook the air and hotel which as you probably know is expensive and almost cost us our confirmations. This was our first vacation of any kind since November of 2007. Just keep in mind that you might have more flexibility than others when things get better.
wiskeesour Nov 4th, 09, 10:33 AM I got the call yesterday. I start in Clovis on Monday the 9th. Yall wish me luck.

Gary L Nov 4th, 09, 07:09 PM Good news. Harley. I am in Clovis, CALIFORNIA. I know nothing about Clovis, NM.
wiskeesour Nov 4th, 09, 10:35 PM Thats odd Gary. I figured you to be the knowledge I wish I had...:D
68RS-SS Nov 6th, 09, 10:27 AM You may need to lean out your carb a little when you get here. Not sure of the elevation difference from where you are but imagine it may be worth a jet size or 2. Also - the bad news of higher elevation is reduced hp so don't think something is wrong with your Camaro when you go out for your first ride - it's the reduced O2 robbing you of power. There is drag race track in Roswell and Alb. (not sure about Las Cruces but think they have one somewhere outisde the city limits). Clovis is a fairly small town located in not the best (geographic) part of the state. I've lived in Northern New Mexico for about 20 yrs. now and the things I like are the abundance of mountains, skiing, outdoor activity, hunting, culture, the local food (makes TX, CA, AZ southwest food taste like its from a frozen box). The attitude here is laid back and not uptight. Things in general seem to happen slower but that's really a good thing. Another great aspect of NM is cars don't rust here. My '68 has been in this state for its entire life and you can't find even a spec of rust anywhere on it. 40-yr old suspension bolts come off like they were put on yesterday. My favorite parts of the state are all in the Northern mountains (Jemez, Chama, Red River). Not to say there are plenty of great places elsewhere but these are my favorite areas to go exploring and camping. There is an annual car show in the majestic town of Angel Fire at the Veterans Memorial there that would be an incredible drive for your Camaro to ride.

Harley, you may just want to supercharge it to be sure.:D The place in Las cruces back in the eighties was on the frontage road heading west on I-10, Fridays @ 12 midnight. Enjoy the food, get you some Hatch roasted green chile as soon as possible! Good luck with the new Job, and which way is Clovis? If ever up in the northern parts, send a pm.

Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 Nov 6th, 09, 11:22 AM Clovis huh... it could be worse, there is always Muleshoe TX a stones throw away. :D I have only been through Clovis a couple of times. I blew a trailer tire in '98 between Muleshoe and Clovis about 8pm one evening and was basicly stuck with no place to fix it. I finally had to haggle a 100.00 bald tire from some guy at a gas station just to get home. :o If you are ever up in the ABQ area let us know.
Congrats and good luck,
:beers:
wiskeesour Dec 30th, 09, 02:44 AM Roger guys, THANKS!!
