: Sneak Preview Finally Some Paint on the Buick
camaroman7d Oct 7th, 09, 04:48 PM Here's a couple quick pictures, just picked the car up from the paint booth. I'm very pleased with the results. It's not perfect by any means, it was never meant to be a show car. I have been working on the car off and on for about 4 years. I will pick up the rest of the parts in a couple days. The pictures don't really show the depth or the slight blue pearl that's over the white. All body work and prep were done by me and it was sprayed at a local shop. More details on that later.

HwyStarJoe Oct 7th, 09, 05:30 PM That's SCARY looking! If I saw that in the lane next to me, I'd be afraid! Very afraid!!

PROZ11 Oct 7th, 09, 05:36 PM Looks A W E S O M E ! ! !
Chuck Oct 7th, 09, 06:00 PM Looks like it is gonna be scary fast, maybe 8's? Drag radials. Is this going to be streetable?
Vintage 68 Oct 7th, 09, 06:01 PM  That look fantastic Royce (looks like Nelly likes it to ;) )
You can just see a hint of the blue-pearl in the last photo - gonna look really nice under cruise-night lights ;)
Im' really impressed with how straight the body sight lines look - that ain't an easy task...
Can't wait to see it back together - it's certainly not a model you're gonna see a lot of cruising around :noway:
You've certainly done the Buick-Boys proud there brother :hurray:
Hey - did you get a new trailer ???
ps: so is it gonna be ready for GoodGuys in a month :D
camaroman7d Oct 7th, 09, 10:41 PM Thanks for the compliments. I still have a ways to go. No major issue, but there are a few ripples. This is by FAR the most difficult body I have worked on there are absolutely no flat areas everything has a taper or angle and most are compounded, meaning while it is an angle it is also contoured. Lesson learned, lol.
Looks like it is gonna be scary fast, maybe 8's? Drag radials. Is this going to be streetable?
I have no desire to go in the 8's. My goal is 9.99 (for this car), this is a street car first strip car second. It runs on 91 octane and the trailer is borrowed, I don't own one. It is very streetable while it doesn't idle like a Cadillac, it surges and the locker clunks, no stereo, etc.. I will drive it everywhere.
That look fantastic Royce (looks like Nelly likes it to )

John,
Yes, Wifey likes it too she knows how much time I spend out there hacking away. She also knows that it makes me happy to build stuff. She's a keeper.
The trailer was borrowed and since he was nice enough to loanit to me, I replaced all the wood decking, repaired some wiring, put a tongue lock on it (didn't want anyone to steal it when it was in my care).
I know it won't be done by the next Goodguys, but if it's somewhat complete I might try to make it. That show os always a crap shoot with the weather.
K and K Oct 8th, 09, 01:39 AM Are you talking about the "Spring get together"? Man, that car has given me one more reason to house shop in Vacaville! Awesome job, what year is the car?

click Oct 8th, 09, 07:46 AM Royce, great job, that blue is so deep, how many layers of paint and CC ? My mom would love what you did with her Skylark's cousin
eville Oct 8th, 09, 10:08 AM Looks great Royce!
68rs406 Oct 8th, 09, 10:23 AM That thing has turned out gorgeous! Nice work Royce. I love that color combination nice choice, and it is really going to look good once the chrome parts are back on.
Awesome looking car, I knew that thing was going to look tough once you were done and you know you won't see another car quite like it, it has killer lines though, maybe you'll start a new trend.
Awesome, well done!
sleepsinshed Oct 8th, 09, 12:49 PM Are they gonna let you drive it on the street with that giant blower sticking out of the hood?
That car is awesome!!
Vintage 68 Oct 8th, 09, 02:23 PM ...This is by FAR the most difficult body I have worked on there are absolutely no flat areas everything has a taper or angle and most are compounded, meaning while it is an angle it is also contoured. Lesson learned, lol...
Yup  you gotta love those late 50's ~ 60's GM "Soft Wire-Frame" styling designs for being a challenge to get right - if you don't know how to block a body line, these bodies are a tough choice to become an 'expert' on :rolleys:
... It is very streetable while it doesn't idle like a Cadillac, it surges and the locker clunks, no stereo, etc.. I will drive it everywhere...
I've always considered 2.5"(+) exhaust (specially when exiting through a set of Borla's ;) ) and excellent street version of "Stereo" :D
...trailer was borrowed and since he was nice enough to loan it to me, I replaced all the wood decking, repaired some wiring, put a tongue lock on it ...
Always return borrowed stuff in better than recieved condition - then it will usually be available again when you need it
...I know it won't be done by the next Goodguys, but if it's somewhat complete I might try to make it.
That show is always a crap shoot with the weather.
You know me, just had to throw that out there :D
You're right, if the rain starts coming in early (like the storm next week) then it will probably be an 'iffy' show again this year.
The Spring show has the same issue some years...
Nice to see the progress
Looking forward to seeing it come together in the near future
I know you don't build them for anyone but yourself, but I bet that it gets it's fair-share of interest from many - as much for the 'quality-of-build' as for the odd (if it's okay to use that term :o ) starting point for the project
John

Ok so now its blue and white, get the doors on and interior in and enjoy yourself :)

camaroman7d Oct 8th, 09, 04:15 PM Are you talking about the "Spring get together"? Man, that car has given me one more reason to house shop in Vacaville! Awesome job, what year is the car?
Come on over to Vacaville, it's a nice place to live and there are a lot of car guys in this town. Not sure where you are now, but I would be happy to show you around. The car will be done by sprig for sure. I think John was talking about the November show, he's funny like that, lol
camaroman7d Oct 8th, 09, 04:29 PM Thanks again fo rthe positive comments. It is nice to see the vision finally coming together. There were many times in the last 4 years I started thinking WHY am I doing this to myself and paying to do it, lol.
Yes, I will drive it on the street. Will the cops hassle me? I don't know yet. I never had a problem with my blown Camaro, but the body style of this car makes the blower look HUGE. The car is very small (about the size of a 63 Nova) and has a low roof line.
What year is this car? It's a 1961 Skylark
As far as paint there are three coats of base blue and 3 coats of clear. The white has 3 coats of white base, 2 coats of clear base with pearl and three coats of clear.
Dave,
I have just a little work left on the Skylark before I can go all out on the Nova. I should be able to have the Nova done by late Spring, depending on the weather. I just need to install the cage and do the body work and paint prep.
Kevin,
You noticed the colors I see, lol. Now maybe I need a big blue Colts horseshoe right on the top. :D
camaroman7d Oct 8th, 09, 04:33 PM Nice Royce ,should I do that to my Dad's Wildcat...Picture in my sig.not a good one ...Happy Motoring...I just bought driver's door chorme for 400.00. ouch but I need it...
Jerome that looks like about a 1965 Wildcat? While I would never suggest taking the route I took. That year Wildcat makes a VERY nice cruiser. They look great with nice wheels and sitting low. As you already noticed when you start working on cars that are not as mainstream, it can be expensive and difficult to get parts.
SixtyAte Oct 9th, 09, 03:53 AM Kevin,

Orrrr....you could do a "Patriots Logo" because all you will need is a bit of red. :) Maybe a red interior
Colts are fine....
I love watching games with the quick thinking quarterbacks. Its nice to see that Peyton Manning is back to his old self after the injury last year. I hope that Brady gets back as fast. He's ok but not himself quite yet..
Kev

You're just evil, lol.
Yes, the Colts look decent so far. Brady has a little ways to go and the Patriots aren't quite as strong as they were in the past few years, but you can never count them out. Once Brady get confident in his leg again they will be a team you don;t want to see in the playoffs.

The car looks great. Glad you enjoyed the pictures of the Skylarks from Cruisin the Coast.

camaroman7d Oct 11th, 09, 12:40 PM I was hoping to have the doors and fenders hung by now, but I threw my back out Thursday evening. I picked up about 30# of metal and threw it in back of my truck, I then bent over to tie my boot and pop, down I went in the driveway. I am getting better, I can almost stand up straight now and I can walk like a human.
JimM Oct 11th, 09, 01:49 PM Car's lookin g GREAT Royce!!!
Go easy on the back Bud!
68rs406 Oct 12th, 09, 10:04 AM That's sucks about the back Royce, hope you start feeling better!
I can empathize with the back thing, when you throw out your back it's all over, I tweaked mine once so bad I couldn't get up off the floor and eventually had to get hauled out in a meatwagon after 24 hours of laying there, they shot me full of who knows what and I was back up and running (well, walking anyway, lol) after a week. The back is a horrible thing to hurt, I wish I was a bit easier on my body when I was younger.
I'm looking forward to the 'all done' pictures!

Come on Royce - a true 'fabricator' would take a piece of 1/2" PVC, drill some 1/16" holes in it, drag his compressor into the bathroom and have great spa in munutes l:)
If the noise bothers you just put the compressor outside and run a hose in through the window ;)
Man I miss the "Red Green" show

camaroman7d Nov 5th, 09, 10:35 PM Ok I have a question for you guys. Be honest. How many of you never thought you would see the day this car would be done? It's not done yet, but it's getting a lot closer. I know there have been guys on here that always talked about a project they were working on and I thought to myself this guy has been talking about that car or engine for years I don't think it will ever get done. Our banned friend PDQ is one that comes to mind.

Reading your posts over the years shows that you are a person who knows what he wants and knows what to do. Knows what he is getting into beforehand and pretty much sticks by his thoughts and beliefs. I can honestly say that I never had any doubt that you would finish this car. One thing tho, I am not sure you had to go with the "Colts" team colors ;) Royce, just kidding, car looks super and the colors bring many of us back in the day when that car was new.

You, as well as most on this forum, have faced numerous challenges to completetion - but you just kept pluggin' along and are getting it done
I catch-your-drift about some of what you read in replies over the years...
But, specially after meeting some of those folks, I tend to cut most of them alot of slack as I am aware of their efforts and the realities of getting large projects completed.
I may never live to see their projects (or some of mine :o ) completed - but the only dfifference will be I never get to lay my eyes directly on it, I will have hopefully imagined at least some of their vision in my own thoughts ...
I wish I had more time, money and dedication to expend on some of my projects - but that's the way my life has unfolded and I do the best I can.
Most of these toys I own are made possible through disposable income - something a little more hard to come by in these present times ...
The 'dream' portion of some have had to fall by the wayside as I re-marshall the funds I would have prefered to use on them and they are redirected to lend support to some of my immediate family that need a boost.
Several of the 'water-toys' have remained a priority spending focus, as the other members of the family can and do enjoy them as much as I do - so I will continue to provide that resourse and let my car projects languish a while longer.
I was talking to the wife just the other day about completeing the paint project on the rag-top so I can use it to cruise a little in the next year or so - we'll see how far I get on that again this winter ...
Sorry for such a long reply to such a short simple statement - this drug on like one of my projects... :D
Mark .L.W. Nov 7th, 09, 09:29 AM Looking very sweet Royce...we knew you could do it . Now you can cruise and make up for all those aches and pains you got working on it. Kev,
Can you believe I just happen to have a matching Colts rear license plate frame, imagine that. As far as the color combo, I wanted it to look similar to when it was new in 1961 except with modern colors. This car came from the factory blue with a white top.
That thing is absolutely beautiful Royce! I love that color combo. I knew it was going to be a sweet car when you posted the first shots of it, I love different and that car is going to be a one of a kind. Awesome..

What, you don't think PDQ will finish his car......? lol
Sean,
You're right I started like gang busters with a very unrealistic goal. I didn't realize how impossible my original goal was. I started working on the car in November of 2006 with the goal of finishing it by August of 2007. Looking back that is just silly. I really didn't know what I was getting into to be honest. I thought I would be able to just back half it, paint it and stuff my engine in it. Then reality hit, the engine wouldn't fit, so that meant moving the firewall back, installing a full frame, new front suspension, etc.. Not to mention trying to find parts for this thing. I also got burned out several times and just let it sit for months. I figure all the breaks add up to about a year.
As far as PDQ, I really don't like to doubt anyone, but I have been on this site for over 8 years and I don't think that car has gotten any closer to driving than when I first started hanging out here. Now that he doesn't hang out hre for hours on end maybe he is in the garage getting it done.
Royce the car is BAD A$$ looking! Dare to be different pays off
BTW Dose every car you own have a BIG A$$ BLOWER sticking out of the hood??
Garry,
Once again thanks for the compliments. When I first saw this car I knew it was kind of homely, but really saw some potential. Well as far as the blowers go, I'm addicted. My other project (1970 Nova) also has a blown engine (8-71 on an aftermarket 400 SBC). I "think" I will do something a little different next time "if" I still have at least one blown car. The feel, look, and sound is something I fell in love with as a little kid. Of course I didn't have the skills, money or a clue at that time, but over the years I just kept studying and doing research, that made my first blown engine a success, so I'm hooked.
Jerome,
That Wildcat you have is one very nice looking body style. I would love to find a clean one someday.
John,
Very deep thoughts and also true. It's not easy juggling the family, career, and still trying to find time and money to invest into a toy. As long as you put the family above all else things seem to work out. I have a very supportive wife which is the only reason I can come close to completing a project like this.
Thanks to everyone for the positive comments and compliments. I see some of you have more faith in me than I thought. I must admit there were times I walked out in the garage and saw how much work I had to do and wondered if I would ever finish. What kept me going is I had the vision of the finished product in my mind.

I've seen your work and I am sure that race car is going to be awesome. Once it's up and running try to make the November trip to the Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas. That is one awesome show. I'm heading down there again this year. Any excuse for us to hang out is fine with me.

Mark .L.W. Nov 7th, 09, 07:55 PM That looks like it would be fun , wonder how hard it would be to find a room and tickets.
Mark.
68rs406 Nov 7th, 09, 09:51 PM Mark, since Vegas is so huge you can almost always get a room no matter what. Tickets are always available too, The strip is so huge and such an awesome venue, they can really pack people in. And Royce is right, it's an amazing show like no other you will see, it has really overshadowed Orlando as the biggest pro street race of the year.
We have been racing there for about the last 6 years, first time we went was the PSCA world finals or whatever they called it, then Mel with the PSCA started the Street car supernationals the following year and it has grown to unbelievable proportions, incredible amounts of money in race teams show up now. Last year we had the king of pro stock himself, Bob Glidden in our class.
Unfortunately this year we won't be coming down (it's official Royce, I was actually getting ready to PM you when I saw this post..) Trevor (my buddy that owns the car) was not working for a couple months this year and had a bunch of other family stuff going on, so they decided the expense was too much to head down this year, it costs him about 5K for the trip and other expenses every year. We are already planning for next year however.... I am REALLY going to miss it this year.
You will have to get some pictures and post them up Royce!
camaroman7d Nov 8th, 09, 01:00 AM That looks like it would be fun , wonder how hard it would be to find a room and tickets.

Getting tickets is not an issue and I don't think getting a room would be a problem at all. I don't think there are any major events going on during this time frame. There are always room available in Vegas. If you decide to make the trip let me know, we'll hang out. Last year I bought my tickets in advance, but surprised a friend of mine when I got down there and I was able to buy tickets on the spot for him.

Sean,
I was wondering if you guys were going to make it. Sorry to hear you're not, but times are a little tough right now. I'll try to take some pictures, I'm not very good at it, but I'll do my best.
dreamweaver Nov 8th, 09, 08:15 AM Great deals in Vegas right now. I booked what I thought was a pretty good deal a couple of weeks ago, only to get offers over the last few days of even better ones. LOT's of rooms for under $100, "Buy 3 nights, get the 4th night free", etc. There are a couple fo conventins at the beginning of next week, but not much from thursday onward... shold be no problem getting a nice room at a decent rate.

Yeah Royce I was holding out to the bitter end, but since Trevor's wife has been slower at work and he was off for a couple months, they decided they better hold off this year and not spend the savings, it's a really expensive trip. I think Brian is still up in the air too, he owns a masonry company and they have been much slower also, plus he has been concentrating on his son's high school football season, the kid is a pretty impressive quarterback, just a junior and his second season of big numbers and getting pretty heavily scouted.
It's too bad too because the last race of the year we took the car out just him and I and another guy for the extra hand, just a casual trip out, and the car is really starting to come together. We went the quickest and fastest the car has gone (7.25 @ 194), still on two small systems. But the 60' times are getting better, we are running in the 1.0XX now like it should so the chassis is FINALLY getting there. We were in the mid to high teens last year in Vegas.
I think we are about 4-5 trips to the track away from 6's, the .25 pass was so easy for the motor it has a lot left still. It's all chassis now.
Sadly though right now the car is still out of contention I'm afraid in 10.5, we could probably make the field again but that's about it. I bet you see a 10.5 car in the .40's this year, and I bet the pro street cars will be running 6.0X's That's just insane. The fastest car does not always win though, as we have seen again and again at that race.
It's going to be a great show, as always!
camaroman7d Nov 9th, 09, 02:27 PM Yeah Royce I was holding out to the bitter end, but since Trevor's wife has been slower at work and he was off for a couple months, they decided they better hold off this year and not spend the savings, it's a really expensive trip.

Maybe next year will look better, if everything goes as planned I will be there again next year. Sounds like the Vette is realy coming along. Very hard to compete with the big money guys that will be there. Just to make the field is a huge accomplishement.
I've heard a couple of the guys in Pro Street have been in the 5's, we'll see how true that is. That's just crazy!
Hopefully everything works out for Brians son, racing can wait. If the kid can get a college education out of his talents that is what it's all about. I have twin nephews that are seniors this year and they are both being scouted for baseball, it's exciting.

5's! Thats just nuts, I figured it was only a matter of time though. I have heard guys are going .50's on 10.5's.
I do feel good that we can even compete, we do all the work in a 3 car garage in a house worth less than some of these guys haulers! And not because the house is small either, but the haulers guys like Pappas and Moran and others are using are million+ dollar outfits. Nuts, where do they get the money I wonder.
I think next year we should have our set up close, if we can run 6.80's, maybe faster if we get lucky, we won't be the fastest by far but we can compete and maybe catch someone.
Hopefully I'll see you next year there, and I'll definitely let you know if we are in the area at a PSCA race or just passing through, I would love to stop and BS a bit.
I agree about Brian's son, He really has not raced this year because of it and none of his buddies even begin to question it. He's a junior and plays for a small town school with no real support from his offense, and puts up passing numbers that have him ranked 1 or 2 in the area, and he's a good kid so that's even better.
That's cool about your nephews, twins too! I would have loved to have the talent to play even division 1 baseball or football, I loved football but I would have been crushed, I'm no big dude now but I was really small in high school, with the same drive to win, lol, that would last about 1 hit in college or even high school ball.
I was too small, too slow, same old story for all us wannabe's haha. I was a wrestler though since I was able to walk basically, but that will only take you so far, and there was no UFC back then...lol.

camaroman7d Dec 21st, 09, 11:09 AM Here is an update picture. The car is getting close and actually looks like a car again. I had some issues with the poor quality chrome job a shop (to remain un-named) did on the grill and head light bezles. Other than a few trim pieces the exterior is pretty much complete.

BrewHog55 Dec 21st, 09, 11:53 AM I dig your car, The big blower is scary!
The early 60's Buick’s have nice lines.
Taking as long as you have and sticking with such a big project only shows that you have mucho talent and real perseverance.
Definitely not a checkbook car, but as good as pro built.
I was lookin at your paint shop roll out pics and it looks like the fuel pump is gonna be hanging out in the wind below the bumper.
Is that gonna be a problem when you hit it hard at the track?:D
The blue and white with a little pearl in the white is a nice color combo.

I don't know if it shows I have talent or if I am just too dumb to give up, lol. The fuel pump does hand a bit low, it was shorter before I sent it in for an upgrade, this makes it stick out the back a little further. It is a concern and may end up getting relocated, just not much room. I might have to find a smaller pump (A1000). Glad you like the car. Not a checkbook car at all, I have as much fun working on them as I do driving them, which is why I usually end up selling them soon after completion. No plans o sell either of the cars I'm working on now.
Looking good Royce, this is definatly going to get some attention...I like the wheel dollies where did you get the casters I never thought of building them.I think we will need them when we start my son Chevelle building them is probably better and cheeper do you think.
Dave,
The wheel dollies are home made, but you can buy them for about the same price when it's all said and done. When I first made them it would even roll, I then put the steel wheels on, drilled the axles, and installed zerk fitting so I could lube them. The ones they sell at the stores don't roll well at all from everyone I talked to, that's why I made my own. The wheels were bought at a local supply company. They roll fairly well.
As far as attention goes, I'm not really into that (it can actually be annoying). I just love building cars/motorcycles and build them to way I want. If people like the finished product GREAT if not that's fine too.

Dean,
Nice to meet you. I see you are from Gilroy, I have family down there. If you follow the local high school sports you probably have seen or heard of the Bradley twins, they are my nephews.
Thanks for the compliment. I would love to see a few pictures of your collection. I just wanted something different and challenging and I had never seen one of these fixed up. The F series cars are Oldsmobiles, correct? Very neat little cars. Not cheap or easy to restore because there are no parts out there for them.
Very nice Royce.
Hopefully the brow bar/cage does not impede your sight.:D:cool::thumbsup:

John,
The chrome shop was in Lodi, I don't remember which one you told me about. I know someone else that went there after me and they got the same poor quality work. I think it is a sign of the times.
Not a big deal going to cost a few bucks and a little time, but I should be ready for Goodguys in Spring.

Those Wildacats don't need much work, they are great looking cars. If you plan to restore it make sure you try to preserve the pot metal. It is very difficult to finda shop that can repair it correctly. Keep an eye on your chrome trim and make sure it's not pitting. An ounce of prevention will save you big money later.

Not a huge amount of trim on this car. I do have the wheel opening trim, trim for the top of the doors, quarter panel, trunk, etc.. I deleted the fat chrome trim that ran along the bottom of the rockers. Probable would have looked nice, but thet is a rust problem waiting to happen (had to repair damage from that already).
camaroman7d Mar 14th, 10, 11:29 PM I'm getting closer, took it down the street and back, felt real good :D To me it's not loud but, most of the neighbors car out to see what was going on. If I can get the headliner sewn and installed along with the windshield and rear window, I will probably take it to the Goodguys show at the end of the month (with no interior or side windows, we'll see). The car sits extrememly low, I may bring the front up 3/4 - 1" The picture of the engine looks like I'm standing on a ladder or something but, that is just me standing on the floor in front of the car.

camaroman7d Oct 29th, 10, 07:05 PM Thanks guys.
Seeing around the blower is not bad, the only time it becomes a hassle is when you are making sweeping right hand turns. To say it isn't in the way would be a lie. In my Camaro it wasn't a problem at all, the engine didn't sit as close to the drive and the blower was a bit lower. It is in no way unsafe, but you do have to stay focussed.
It's not quite ready for Goodguys yet, no gauges and no carpet. I was invited to bring it and put it inside, finished or not, but that's not my style. It has to be done. I have a few spots to color sand and buff and also a few assembly "scratches" to touch up. I'm hoping it will be ready for the Sacramento Autorama.
Click,
I love that picture, very cool. I will have to set one up similar to that with my god daughter, that would be nead to have the pictures side by side. I should be able to pull it off this spring.

Thanks! The car is not a "show car" by any stretch but, I don't want to bring it out for the first outing have finished. I built the car to drive and enjoy, I can't enjoy it until it's done.
I saw a video of a green Skylark (same body style) at the drag strip and it was FAST I think it ran 8.50.
I'm getting close and more motivated as the end is closer.

Jody,
I never had a problem with the Camaro at all. I drove that thing everywhere, even to Nevada and never once was hassled. I'm sure if I run accross the right/wrong officer I will get a ticket. I'm knocking on wood that I have teh same luck in the Buick.
If it really becomes a problem I will take the 8-71 off and put on a Procharger, I don't want to go that route if I can help it. The whole reason for getting rid of teh Camaro and building the Buick was to put this engine in it.

camaroman7d Oct 30th, 10, 10:20 PM Skip,
I won't make this GG's show with the car. I don't have the interior in the car and I don't have any of the gauges in the car yet. Once the dash is done, everything will fall into place. Still have a little ways to go. Most of the wiring is done, but still have to take care of a few items (line lock, OD unit, brake light switch, etc..).

camaroman7d Nov 1st, 10, 07:05 PM I do have 6 cylinders, so what's the problem? Actually no the three "ports" on the fender don't tell you what engine is in the car. Mine is a rare RS/SS Skylark it even has a caution fan sticker (REALLY).

Will do, probably won't be until spring. That track is known to weep a little water after the rains start, so even if it's been dry for a week, the top end of the track can sometimes be slick. I hope to have the car "done" before the end of the year. First time to the track will probably only be 1/8 mile passes until I see how she wants to act.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Nov 2nd, 10, 03:27 PM Very Nice Royce wont be seeing a ton of these like orange and white 69 pro-street Camaro....
camaroman7d Nov 2nd, 10, 07:23 PM Thanks David. There's a reason you see so many first gens, that's because they are a great looking car. Plenty of them out there and easy to get parts for. I've owned two first gens myself and 3 - 1970 Camaros. I just felt the need to do something different and challenge myself. I was/am challenged for sure, very difficult car to build. Hands down the hardest car I ever done bodywork on.
There's a reason my other project is a 1970 Nova, lol.
camaroman7d Jan 27th, 11, 09:41 AM Well I finally just about finished the car, lol. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do to mount the hood. Is "Velcro" rated to 200+ :D
Is there reinforcement(s) under the hood you can mount pins or latches to?
Thinking you could put some type of rear tangs to engauge a slot(s) and then pins in front to engauge holes and install the clips from under the front fender/grill area - maybe ... (might be a pain to reach up under to install pin clips, but good theft deterent)
Course you could always go "Old-School" (r-e-a-l-l-y old-school ;)) and install Leather Straps across the hood with big Buckles on them :D

Calpantera Jan 27th, 11, 12:45 PM Looking good Royce, I don't suppose anyone makes a fiberglass hood for those huh? :)
When do I get to go for a ride?? :)
fatblock Jan 27th, 11, 03:36 PM Wonderful job Royce. Thanks for sharing the pics.
68rs406 Jan 27th, 11, 07:00 PM Sweet work, as usual Royce! I really like how you used grey and blue together like you did inside, that has to look killer with the whole car. Incredible job for sure.
So I have a question for you about the seats. After looking at all the options for seats to replace the stock neck breakers in mine, I have come to realize the cost to have a stock late model seat recovered is ridicules.
I have always like the Kirkey seats though and I could get them with blue covers like yours (did they come with the grey like that too?). They are way lighter, look 10000X better than the import racer looking seats you see and are way more reasonable.
My question, how comfortable are they with the covers? Could you spend an hour driving and still walk when you stopped?
My old butt can still put up with a lot, but I'm getting softer...lol.

I have been thinking about having a fiberglass hood made, but I already have my metal hood all modified and painted.
I plan to make a trip or two to southern California this year to maybe hit Bob's Big Boy or some of the other events down there. You are more than welcome to go for a ride. Keep me posted on the good events down there and we'll try to hook up on one.
 OMG !!!
It's looking fantastic Royce!

I haven't given much thought to mounting the hood, I had so many other things to get done. I am 99% sure it will have to hinge in the front and tilt forward. Either that or lift off and after having a liftoff hood when I was 19 I swore I would never do that again. It really takes two people just to check the oil (if you don't want scratches). I have a few more minor things to do (new double adjustable rear shocks and a chromoly track locator bar. I just have to weld up the track bar tonight (it is already cut, cleaned and clamped)
Wonderful job Royce. Thanks for sharing the pics.
Thanks! It's not perfect by any means. You just don't see all the flaws in teh pictures. I'm going to drive the wheels off of it anyway.

Thanks Sean! No the seat covers didn't come with the gray on them. I had the black changed to gray at my local upholstery shop. The seats are comfortable even without the covers. With the covers they are more than adequate for a couple hour drive. I haven't taken a voyage that long yet so I am just judging from the seat time I have had. You can also add extra cushion under the cover if needed. Seriously they are fine and I don't see any comfort issues.
This is what I had visioned in my head, but was a little worried if it would look right (gray and blue), I'm happy with the outcome. I knew white would get dirty way to easy and thought the light gray and silver would be a nive alternative. Glad you like it.
67goldrsss Jan 27th, 11, 07:31 PM Nice car, I had a pro street 70 el camino ss last year and they really get the looks.
68rs406 Jan 27th, 11, 07:37 PM Thanks for the input Royce! I pretty much think I have decided on those seats, they look "right" in an older car and are light as heck.
Probably need a bar to mount them too though huh?

Thanks. I don't know if I would call it a pro street or not. It doesn't have huge tires out back just 325/50/15's. I just call it a street car.

Well I think once you change the seats from factory to any racing or aftermarket seat they have to be bolted to the roll bar. If you don't plan to install a roll bar/cage then they might flex more than you would want. I made my own floor mounts, very basic and simple.
camaroman7d Jan 27th, 11, 08:02 PM Haha I just noticed the silver overspray on my Crane timing retard. Have to go out there now and remove that over spray.

Yeah I was going to say something about that...lol.
I figured that about the seats, I need to just man up and put a bar in anyway, if the new motor works out im pretty sure I'll be needing one.
zuma Jan 27th, 11, 09:21 PM Nice Royce, real nice...you are a true craftsman, my friend...Can't wait to see it... Have you lit it up yet? :)

You're going to need a roll bar if you want to be legal. That thing is going to be fast. I don't blame you for not wanting to install one though. You could always just go with a different type of seat and hold off on the bar until they force your hand.
Should have said something about the overspray, I remember cleaning the other side of it and the face of it. I had it tucked up under the dash when I sprayed the silver, but of course I still got some on it.

Thanks Mike. I have left a few light black marks, but not a nice real big smokey one yet, I'm itching to test out the line lock though. It's been way to long!

I hope it turns out fast, sure seems like it should be though... I'm back going on it again, just sent out one of the cams that was a turbo grind to be reground yesterday, and have been working with my buddy on the heads/ intake and getting all that stuff sorted out. Absolutely going nuts to be back on the road with it.
I was joking about the overspray Royce, that thing is clean as a whistle! It's amazing how clean it is for a just finished car. (finished... who you trying to kid..lol) When I read that I went back to see what you were talking about, it took me a minute to find.
That thing is sweet, I really like how it turned out.
Fred Mertz Feb 6th, 11, 09:28 PM I heard from an "anonymous" source that the Buick is DONE!
:)
prostreet69camaro Feb 7th, 11, 08:56 PM It definitey looks nice. Is it done ^^^^^^^^^^^?
camaroman7d Feb 7th, 11, 11:14 PM Well I don't know if it's "done". I have a few places I want to touch up and the hood isn't on yet. Other than that it's done, of course I already have a few additions I want to make. Change the front suspension limit cables to straps (have the parts just need to do a little fab work). It's on my "to do" list for tomorrow. I also want to get some decent roll bar padding.
I have been out driving it and it rides nice. Even had it on the highway a couple times. I still need to weigh the car, I'm curious about that.
