View Full Version : 68 Camaro Decode please.
Tommya77 Oct 7th, 09, 07:47 PM Sorry to bother you guys. Just curious if you could decode my 68 Camaro for me. It has a weird ZZ for the paint. Any ideas what it is?
looks like this
03B
ST 68-12437 NOR105668 BODY
TR 712 ZZ PAINT
Any ideas, that would help a lot. I got the car at an auction, and I am trying to sell it. Just curious what the ZZ was.
Thanks so much, any books I can buy to help me so I don't bother you all?

Tommya77 Oct 7th, 09, 10:04 PM I am asking 15k for it. It was tubbed in the trunk and has a 10k dollar paint job on it. I got it at an auction, but my wife is having our new baby before to long and I need to recoup some money. It also has a roll cage, but would be easy to convert back to a pure street car.
Is the ZZ rare?

Not too rare, just kinda ugly, mine started out life British Green.
Jay68Z28 Oct 7th, 09, 10:54 PM Not too rare as Lane stated. Not my favorite color either, I owned a 983 paint code 68 Vette 327/350 that was in the same condtion as my Z/28 and I painted it black. I will paint this one Green, as the car will be completely restored correctly. To answer your question on rarity: ZZ was not introduced until January of 68 and according to CRG as of 2008, 7% were British Green.
Jay68Z28 Oct 7th, 09, 11:01 PM Is it a Z/28?
Tommya77 Oct 8th, 09, 09:36 AM Yea it is a 3 tone car now. Purple/blue on top. silver on bottom, with Airbrushed yellow flames going through it. I have no idea if it is a true ss or just a plain jane. I have no way of telling. I wish there was some book out there that would help me.

Eric Kammerer Oct 8th, 09, 10:11 AM Any of the books, like Jerry's 67-68 fact book, are not likely to be a big help on a car that has been heavily modified, especially a 68.
First is the VIN on the top of the dash. If it is a 123378 car, it was a 6 cyl, 124378 it was a V8.
If the car was an original SS, it would have had the SS domed hood and 28 coil hood springs. The way it sounds, the car is not likely to have an OE hood.
It also would have had factory installed rivnuts for the dual exhaust hanger on the driver side rear frame rail. Again, it sounds unlikely that the car has OE frame rails.
It would have had a 12-bolt rear axle. Again, yada yada.
If it was a factory Muncie 4-speed equipped car (either SS or Z28 only), there would be a stamped/punched hole approx. 1 inch in diameter under/to the passenger side of the wiper motor where the speedo cable went.
If it was a factory RS, it would have a stamped/punched hole approx. 1 inch in diameter just to the driver side of the brake booster/master cylinder, for the two vacuum lines and grommet for the headlight switched vacuum. It would also have stamped holes in both the tailpan and tailpan reinforcement for the reverse lights under the bumper. The electrical wires for the reverse lamps would go through the trunk floor next to the tailpan brace (in a certain spot). It would have original GM RS front fenders, with the deeper bucket where the hidden light/trim assemblies bolted up, and the wiring for the RS lower valence parking/turn signals would go through a hole in the inner fender in a certain spot. The windshield washer jug would be relocated to the correct spot on the driver side inner fender, with a correct 68 vacuum tank in the cavity in between the rad support and driver side fenderwell.
So, plenty of clues, most of which I would guess are long gone from a heavily modified car. At this point, without any paperwork like the POP, it is just a modifed 68 Camaro.
