: console as a cup holder?

I have an Idea that I would like to get some input. I have a column shift, so no console:(. This can be a major hassle when driving around with no where to put my coffee mug and no arm rest. I have seen in the NPD catalog that they have a center arm rest with cup holders that match the interior color (light blue) and are approx. 100.00. I had an Idea of finding a driver quality console and using the cut out area that the shifter goes in as the cup holder. What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

You can try and work it up, but spending $200 for a place to put your coffee is like spending $12k to keep your butt warm. Might just consider getting one of the cup holders that can be bought in the parts catalogs for $29 that slides into the ashtray holder.

Orrr - go to a couple of the 'pick-n-pull' places locally and look for some of the smaller foriegn mini-van/thingys and check out the short little consols they used with a arm-rest and cup-holder set-up ;)
I haven't bought one yet - but I've given them the once-over a couple of times thinking "what if"... :D

Nantooch,

Thanks for the insight, too funny. When you put it that way it does sound like a waste of $$$.

Why even have a cup holder...
If having a coffee on the way to work...get up a little earlier and sit back and relax and enjoy
If on a road trip...stop off , take a break, nice cuppa of tea and devonish scones.

Why rush like, slow down and en take the time to enjoy it.

Why risk an accident because of a moments distract?

Those $109 consoles in the catalogs come in models for cars WITH and WITHOUT consoles. Have you considered getting the non-console style and gaining not only 2 cup holders but an arm rest to boot?

Hey Steps man..... this is America! We do everything FAST and in our cars. :)
If we could, we'd have our meals, take showers, watch TV and hold wedding ceremonies in our cars, just so we don't have to slow down.
:beers:

The Plug & Chug is also an option. Goes in your ashtray slot.

They've got 'em in different colors for as low as $29.

Go ahead and get the $100 saddle armrest for non console car though. You'll get the armrest, two drink holders, and extra storage and it'll match your interior. Besides, you already practically had yourself talked into spending $300 for a factory style console that doesn't give you any of that.

See, now instead of talking on the phone while you drive sloooooooowly around town, you can bring along a nice cup of coffee and enjoy that nice slooooooooow drive around town with your favorite brew. You can even get the arm rest model and lean while you sip!

I saw a setup at a car show on a 67 with column shift similar to this, but instead of removing the console lid, he put the cup holder where the shift plate would go. This way you get the best of both worlds - cup holders and console storage, and it looks more original than the other setups.
