: Fold Down Seat Restoration
69RSConvt Oct 9th, 09, 04:49 PM Recently picked up a fold down rear seat for the vert and it is in need of restoring. According to the seller it sat in storage for almost a decade. I plan to recover it with deluxe houndstooth however any tips?
TIA

69mustang Oct 13th, 09, 05:01 AM See that piece of carpet on the back of the upper seat? I have ordered that three times from two different suppliers and now am the proud owner of three wrong ones. If you are so lucky to find the right one, let me know. thanks. Eric

Where did you order from so we don't end up doing the same thing?
I have a 67 and a 69 fold down rear seat that both need new carpeting. ( I was thinking of just re-dying them since they are not frayed or ripped, just faded...)
Thoughts,suggs?
6781camaro Oct 16th, 09, 09:34 AM Since all of the metal parts are removable, I would strip them down, or blast them in a cabinet blaster, epoxy them, then re-paint.
You can buy the new carpeting for about $35 anywhere. Just not sure where the best place is though.
You will need the floor mounting brackets for the side hinges too (if you don't have them already). They are $50 per pair repro. These are welded to the floor pan underneath the bottom section.
You will also need the rear seat partition and lower steel partition channel that spans across the car to hold the partition. This needs to be welded in place too.
The seat foams are not reprod, but I am sure you can massage a standard rear seat bottom foam to fit these if need be.
The seat springs and frame can be blasted and repainted as well.
So basically, depending on how nice you want it, strip it down completely, treat the rust, repaint, and reassemble. Not a hard job at all. I LOVE interior work. Can't wait to hang out in this forum during my 69 coupe resto. I've been in the bodyshop forum for over two years now.... I love that stage too though. Fun!
69RSConvt Oct 22nd, 09, 10:42 PM So I decided to powder coat the seat, hardware and frame. Came out excellent! I also agree that the repro carpets are shorter than the original and do not fit very well. Next to the interior shop for the Hounds tooth install. Thanks to those who offered their wisdom. Much appreciated!!

Mr. Super Sport Oct 23rd, 09, 05:03 AM Wow really looks nice.
click Oct 23rd, 09, 07:52 AM Turned out great, we love our fold down, very practical on long trips for luggage.
Now a suggestion ... site policy ask folks to keep photos to around 880 wide. (880 x 660 seems about the best). This keeps members from having to scroll side to side to see details and keeps the writing in line and not needing scrolling to read as well. Plus, large photos are killers for the folks on dial up. Just reduce them down a little bit, thanks:)

Thanks for the info in the 101 located in your sig. I just learned the pics need to be resized prior to uploading at the host. Dowloaded the resizer in your link and life is again good.
GR8_68 Oct 23rd, 09, 06:31 PM Great thread. I'm looking for a fold down rear seat for my vert. At first I discount their usefulness, then I loaded a box into the back seat and sliced into the vinyl. Now I want a fold down before I re-do the interior.
I'd love to get some recommendations on powdercoaters, and upholsters. I too will give my car the houndstooth treatment. But I wont get my car back from paint and body for a couple of months.

69RSConvt Oct 23rd, 09, 08:41 PM Yes, if you plan on adding a few options the fold down rear seat on the convertible seems a natural addition. The problem is locating one in relatively restorable condition.
Sent you a PM on local PC shops.

wagonman Oct 27th, 09, 08:45 PM looks good!
question......what is holding your door pull handles onto your door panel?
did you put a nut on the back side?

Yes I completely assembled the deluxe door panels with the upper grab handle bezel and screws. Much easier to position in this way.
jl8dale Nov 9th, 09, 07:51 AM What brand of door panels did you go with?
Do you know what brand of fold down seat carpet that you received from Firewheel?
69RSConvt Nov 9th, 09, 08:50 AM I went with Al Knoch door panels and the fit was excellent. Took a bit to set them up with all of the cut outs, trim and clip installation but once complete the fit went smoothly. Contact FWC on the carpet. They only offer one.
jl8dale Nov 17th, 09, 07:44 AM I just received my fold down seat carpet from FireWheel and it fits beautifully!
It is ACC brand for anyone who needs to order one in the future. I received my first carpet from another vendor which was approximately 3/4" short side to side!
Another "exact reproduction" one should avoid buying .
Moving along to my new door panels due in this week from OER.....should be fun.
