View Full Version : Quarter window roller - will this one work?
zlek131 Oct 10th, 09, 05:46 PM I am trying to repair my driver's side quarter window. It is missing one of the rollers. I believe I found the replacement roller but it comes with pin. I need to know if I'll be able to pop the roller off the pin and pop it on to the existing pin. Here is the picture with the details. The also here is link (http://www.classicindustries.com/controller.cfm?type=product&action=productDetail&partNumber=7794097&startRow=1&sortBy=1&sortOrder=1&resultsPerPage=10¤tPage=1&productId=51023&productSearchCatalogId=1) the replacement roller in the pictures.

Well...will the old part simply unscrew and the new one screw it? Didn't seem that way when I looked at it but I could be wrong. Seemed like the old part was pressed in or somehow part of the window...
68zproject Oct 11th, 09, 10:50 PM If that roller attaches to the glass, it's held on with a round type of nut that holds the roller to the glass. My was on the bottom of the inside of the window well and I threaded it back on. It has two little holes for a special type of wrench to hold it to turn. I used a pair of snap ring pliers.
rogerh Oct 11th, 09, 11:00 PM That roller goes through the bottom of the window and has a nut on the other side. I forget if it is a special nut. Just get a mirror and check it out. You may need some kind of a spanner wrench. You could of gotten the roller and nut. Check out the link below.

zlek131 Oct 12th, 09, 09:06 AM I'll get a mirror and take a look from the back. Thanks.
zlek131 Oct 12th, 09, 12:17 PM Here is the rear view of the roller using a mirror. Looks like the nut is broken off...??? I'll take a peak at passenger side.

stamatisg1977 Oct 12th, 09, 12:32 PM nah its not broken off.....its completely deteriorated from rust!!!!you can see the lighter areas where the holes in the nut were. i would just replace the whole plate. let me know wich one you need i have both my quarters out and halve all the plates, nuts and rollers and i can ship you out the one that you need
rogerh Oct 12th, 09, 01:14 PM Matt you know you should take that window and track out of the quarter to repair it. You need to grind the rest of that nut off the window and the track looks like it has too much rust on it for the rollers to run on it smoothly. I think you can remove the rubber U shaped weather strip on the doorjamb to get the window out.

zlek131 Oct 12th, 09, 02:37 PM Yes, I also think the window will need to come out. I tried to unscrew the roller stud with a pair of small vice grips and it's refusing to turn. I am sure it’s bound/froze pretty good by the rust on the threads. I soaked it in Kroil but still no luck. I don't think I want to put too much force on it as it is glass that I am working with. I'll try to take the window out...
zlek131 Oct 14th, 09, 11:51 PM Well, looks like I got myself a little mini project. I got the window out (that was pain…). Took out the railing next and that wasn’t too bad. Railing has got some rust on it but nothing that can’t be removed. Thinking about replacing the window attachment/roller assembly as it’s a little rusted on the surface while the bolts are pretty bad. Although, the rollers look OK and who cares is the bolts are rusted - I don’t think they are going anywhere. Any suggestions? When I bought the car, the qtr window chrome molding on that side was rusted/pitted pretty bad so I’ll replace that as well along with new weatherstrip. So here is what I am thinking:
Qtr window vertical weather strip comes with the steel insert (come in pairs) $30 (link (http://www.classicindustries.com/camaro/K664.html))
Qtr vertical chrome moldings & Channel Insert (come in pairs) $80 (link (http://www.classicindustries.com/camaro/K1039.html))
Qtr window attachment/roller assembly $30 (link (http://www.classicindustries.com/camaro/K845.html))
Qtr window lower guide roller $9 (link (http://www.classicindustries.com/camaro/7648823.html))
Or I could just splurge and get an assembled quarter window $230 (link (http://www.classicindustries.com/camaro/B1076.html))
Wonder how well these really fit? Anyone ever purchased one of these?
Here are some pics. The tint and overspray are KY special from the previous owner… Which I’ll be removing. ;)

zlek131 Oct 15th, 09, 12:27 PM Soaked the rusted parts in some rust remover over night...looking much better already. I am still considering purchasing the entire window & assembly which would include new glass but not sure how the repro glass really fits. Has anyone used this qtr window assembly from Classic?

zlek131 Oct 28th, 09, 09:22 PM Making a little progress on this as I am in no hurry. We got a foot of snow on the ground so the camaro is not going any where for a while. I got the railing all prepped and painted with POR-15. Never used this stuff before but researched it here and found lots of good feedback. I got the starter kit and I am really happy with how it turned out.

Bill, spares of what? Thanks.
zlek131 Nov 29th, 09, 10:14 AM Got the window put back together. I was surprised how somewhat easily the window went in. I had my father-in-law help me out. It took us longer messing with the adjustments then actually getting the window in. I was prepared to fight with it after reading all the posts but was happy we didn't have to or perhaps just got lucky. A few hints:
While you have the glass and track out, practice how you’re going to insert the glass onto the track.
Leave the vertical chrome moldings & channel insert off and install after them after the window is in.
I would recommend leaving the window tracks unbolted as that gives you more maneuvering ability when you’re inserting the window onto the track. Also, don’t worry about hooking the window’s crank track on to the crank roller initially (the rear roller/track that hooks up to the arm that actually lowers/raises the window as you turn the crank. Just get the window slid into the main track and then maneuver the whole thing onto the crank roller/track. Make sure one person holds the window from the top at all times (so it doesn’t fall in) until you get the crank track/roller attached.
Also when putting on the vertical chrome molding & channel insert on the glass, slide the channel insert onto the glass first and then push the chrome molding on top it. Instead of trying to push the chrome molding and the channel insert inside of it on to the glass. Helps to have a helper as one person can push the piece on while the other pushes on the glass from the opposite side which helps to stabilize the glass. We used soap to help us get the chrome piece on the rubber channel but found out this is NOT the way to do it. Soap does make it easier to put the pieces on but at the same time you don’t get a good seal and the pieces will separate easily. So, no soap, just some good force.
Couple pics of how the window turned out...
