: Driver door lock problem
cmking26 Oct 11th, 09, 04:19 AM I've never messed with door locks before. My driver side if you lock it and shut the door it will not unlock. The lock pulls up a little but does not unlock the door. Anyone know what I need to replace, off the top of their head?
8ballracing Oct 11th, 09, 06:37 AM You might find that the problem is a small spring that has broken or has gotten weak in the latch......Do a search and you will find a few threads on the subject with pictures.....
The spring is available for a couple of dollars and is not that hard to replace but the latch does need to be removed to replace the spring...

The only place I could find them was Rick's. Order something else with them because what they charged to ship a 2oz. envelope was disturbing.

I replaced the driver's side spring without removing the latch assy - wasn't easy, but I did it. Do a search - there is a post that I can't find quick enough for you with a picture of the spring installed - very helpful.

NHBandit Oct 11th, 09, 10:33 AM Classic Industries also sells them but I believe they are sold individually at 5 bucks a pop (left & right are different) and unless you're placing a large order the shipping will kill you. Is there anyone anymore who will stick a small part like this in an envelope and charge you the price of a stamp ? I understand these guys need to cover expenses but customer service seems like it's gone to hell everywhere.
HwyStarJoe Oct 11th, 09, 02:37 PM Criag, you might find that it's just the latch mechanism is gunked up and needs to be cleaned. It's easy to remove from the door. Problems aren't always broken or missing parts. The latching mechanism was full of grease 40+ years ago.... now it's dried up, hardened and useless.
I cleaned the internals of both of mine and now they work perfectly.
Soak it in some parts cleaner or spray it real well with carb cleaner, dry it and then spray the inside with lithium grease. Work all the moving parts and give it a shot. Might save you some time and money.
cmking26 Oct 11th, 09, 05:29 PM The latch mechanism comes off with the three screws in the door jamb right? Ill try that.
HwyStarJoe Oct 11th, 09, 07:02 PM Not sure about a '67. Should be three screws and two linkages.... door opener and lock.
jl8dale Oct 12th, 09, 11:47 AM Agree with HwystarJoe. Had the exact same problem in my 1969 pace car. Soaked the hell out of it and it still wasn't releasing properly. I worked the mechanism by hand a bunch of times, and finally, it let loose and some crud fell out over the bench.
I soaked it in solvent but others have said to use gasoline. Either way, make sure the mechanism releases in a "snap" fashion and you're good to go.

cmking26 Oct 21st, 09, 04:21 PM Once again you guys are awesome and solved my problem. I love this website. My driver door mechanism was missing the little spring entirely. I replaced it and it works perfect now. :hurray:

brownnote Oct 21st, 09, 09:29 PM good to hear. I actually just had the same issue yesterday. went to put new tires on the rear and couldn't open the door. I bounced the door lock plunger up and down a bunch of times and it finally released. My spring is all bent out of whack, so when I place another order I will get another spring. I hear ya on the shipping. I always try to have 50-100 bucks before I make an order because it is min. 10 bucks everytime! jeesh!
at any rate, what a simple fix to something that really got me going for an hour or two!
