Here is a picture of the Trim Tag. It appears to be a true RS, but is it an SS as well? The current owner assures me that th 396 that was in it, is the original engine. I just want to verify that I can tell him he's full of beans...

One more question... I see the LOS 100004. Is this really the 4th Camaro to come off the Van Nuys line? Would that make it worth any more? ..and is it possible that they weren't listing the original engine codes on the trim tag at that point?

I know how to decode the tag. I was just making sure that one of the earliest built camaros didn't have some sort of 'gotcha' where they didn't include the 4N...

Its not the 4th Los car. The tag is 11E, whats the vin number? The number on the tag is a Fisher Body number not the GM number. No options in the 4th category would make it either a 6cyl or 327 8 cyl depending on the 3rd number in the vin (3-6cyl, 4-8 cyl)

It would be the 10,004th of the 12637 deluxe interior body style. LA started each body style at 1. So there would be a 1 for body style 12437, 12467, 12637 and 12667. Norwood was sequential for them all so no matter the body style there wood only be one #1 body, #2, etc. whereas LOS would have four for each number #1, #2, etc.

As far as options go, it is an RS with Air conditioning but not an SS 350 or SS 396-

Thanks guys. You've been really helpful and I have everything I need to know. I called the current owner and informed them that it wasn't an SS. They told me that they meant to take that off of the advertisement and that the car was only an RS with an original 396.

I then told them that it didn't come with a 396 if it was only an RS, but they were sure that it did because their uncle knows cars and he assured them it was. They also said the DMV verified that the engine (some unknown big block) was the original engine and it's been registered as an RS/SS... I wasn't really sure what to say at that point, other than I've decoded the trim tag, and I'm no longer interested in the car.

I am 97% sure 11E is too early for an SS396 car.

And when they go through all that BS like that, you just hang up and move on...

Welcome to TC, by the way!

Well, it seems to matter quite a bit as far as resale value. I looked at another camaro yesterday, and it looks like I'm going to pick that one up. It's a 67 RS/SS convertible automatic. Before you ask, no, it doesn't have the original 350 in it, but I'm ok with that. :D

You guys rock! I'm freakin excited!!!
I'm picking it up tomorrow. Think I'll be ok to drive it 15 miles to my house without the cops pulling me over? This is the first car I've bought that isn't from a dealer, so I don't know if it's legal to drive to my house if I don't have insurance on it yet.

Don't know how your insurance works, but when I guy a car, one phone call to my agent starts coverage on the car. Here in PA, if you don't have proof of insurance, you can't get a license plate for the car. So, unless the seller is loaning you his tag for the drive home, or you're putting another plate you have on the car...

Whatever you do, make sure you post pics of your new baby here soonest. :):)

The DMV verified a big block? Interesting, on all the Camaros I've ever owned originally registered in California the titles have just said "Chevrolet" and the model year. They've never said, model or engine size/type.

Those guys are really trying to stretch the value of their car. :p
