Since nobody wants to reveal how to spot the fakes I've been studying them myself looking for the differences and my vote is that this one is a fake. Now I'll wait for the expert opinion to see how I did.

Looks fake to me but im not an expert. Not a factory style rivet.

There are fakes though that you can't notice in my opinion. I ran across a company a long time ago the reman'd correct rivets. There are places out there that remake tags also.

It is a lousy photo but I believe it is real. The LH rivet is full of sealer.

I saw the car on ebay; it has a shopping list of issues.

A Garnet red car would have black stripes, the body tag shows a black interior but the car has red. It should have a clock, rockers should be black. Lots more component/finish issues. The ad avoids claiming original drivetrain but states the components are within the cars' build date.

04L is an oddity. There are more than a few of them so I doubt it is an error. They are interspersed with 05A cars. I am sure it meant something to Fisher Body, no one knows what.

Yes, William the car is on ebay right now. Your observations are right on. I sent a message to the seller to see if I could provide engine block stamping pics and better shot of the trim tag. If he replies with info then I will share it.
Thx. Joe

That tag is real, and the rivets are correct style. I had a 4L car that was an X44. Cars in the late April timeframe got the 4L for some reason.

IMO it looks like it has been off the car at one point. The paint finish on the tag and the paint on the fire wall look different. There is also no finish build up around the tag, almost like the fire wall was painted with the tag off and the tag painted sepperate/krylon? From the shadow on the RH side it looks a little loose as well, I havnt seen many originals with a gap like that.

Im not saying its a repop, just that it looks like its been off at one time?

Anyone?

Jeremiah, I agree. My first thought was that it had been off the car but the tag looked real. The clues I look for (no expert here) are no problem with this tag. I didn't really catch the 04L date code till it was mentioned.

What's the VIN for the car? I don't see it in the ad.

I agree, this is a real GM tag, but did it come from this car? I believe this tag has been removed at one time...Maybe for anti theft reasons or maybe somebody wanted a Z28??? Ask him to take some steel wool to the goop comming out of the one rivet. I bet it's not redish brown...
