I had a neighbor years ago that put a 427 steel truck crank out of a 427 in his 396 to power his blazer and had no problems. I have an extra one and would like to know the pros and cons of using it. Its free and I may choose to build around it if there is no down side to it.

They are excellent just must be balanced.

Check the forging numbers - 6223 is pretty common, steel, works fine. 7115 is the cross-drilled and nitrided one, supposedly stronger steel, too. Either is fine for a high revving big block mill. Good luck.

it should hold up fine. my buddy had a 427 that had a GM forged crank,GM ported aluminum heads, stock rods, forged pistons, the only exotic pieces were the roller cam and hilborn IR injection intake(alcohol). he would shift at 7800 rpm and ran 5.24 at 134 mph in the 1/8 mile,in a 1900 lb rail.the motor never blew up. another buddy had pretty much the same set up but with steel heads, the rod let go after 7 years of dragging on the stock GM rods.but this motor saw 8500 rpms a few times on the burn out(he wasn't too bright, just liked the noise and to show off to the crowd.) these motors were built by HUFFS HIGH PERFORMANCE in n.windham,me. he's also my friend.

Use it, but it MUST be re ballanced. The truck 427 has a very heavy piston with 4 rings and isn't even close to being ballanced right for a performance 427 or 396. The 366 truck crank is also the same as the 427 truck crank.

You could be right. I have one but I never checked it out real close, but I think it's a 3.76 like the 427.
