View Full Version : muffler/exhaust
thorpe67RS Jun 15th, 04, 05:06 AM I am looking at putting new exhaust system on my 67. i think i am going to put flowmaster exhaust on it but want to make sure i choose the right muffler. Most of what i have seen suggests the delta flow 40 series. i want something that makes it sound like a muscle car should sound. I dont want it to be obnoxiously loud but still sound powerful. there are many mufflers in the flowmaster line to choose and just wanted to make the right choice. anyone out there running flowmasters would love to hear some feedback or thoughts.
rojo Jun 15th, 04, 07:12 AM I'm running the Flowmaster system with the Delta Flow 40's on the '69 and a muffler shop system with the 50 series on the '67. The 40's are definitely louder than the 50's but not too loud for my taste. It's hard to judge what's too loud for one person versus another. Also a high compression big cam motor with headers will be a lot louder than a stock one. The best bet if you have time is to visit some of the cruise ins and when you hear something you like ask what they're running.
Judd Jun 15th, 04, 09:30 AM You could always go to the FlowMaster website and they have sound bites with the tone of each of muffler offered.

phel69 Jun 15th, 04, 12:24 PM I have the 40s on my 454 and IT'S TOO LOUD . Sorry about the shouting, I can't hear anymore  It's not just that it's too loud, I don't really like the drone and tone.
ORENCH Jun 15th, 04, 01:04 PM Here, 350ci engine w/Hedman headers, 3" into 2-1/2" Dr Gas "X" pipe, thru 2-1/2" 40 series Flowmaster and 2-1/2" Flowmaster tailpipes. The best part is, I Love the sound. Hear at mi sig. graemlins/beers.gif
phel69 Jun 15th, 04, 02:49 PM ORENCH; I think that your system sounds better than mine does. I have an H pipe. At about 3000 rpm mine seems like it makes your head vibrate with resonation. It's almost too loud to talk over. Mine sounds good, Im just getting old I guess. The good side is that cops don't seem to bother old guys in loud cars as much as young guys in loud cars. :D
PDQUICK Jun 16th, 04, 03:09 AM I have a Flowmaster Force II system on my '68 and everyone tells me it's too loud!! I think it's just about right for my 40 yr old taste!! This is a 2 1/2" system with a small H crossover and single transverse Flowmaster muffler. It fits very much like the factory system and was a fairly easy install.
It's pretty mello at idle, and roars under hard accel!! :D I did have to insulate my trunk/rear seat bulkhead pretty substantially so that my stereo sounds decent!
I gotta admit that I still try to get out of the throttle when I go by a police cruiser!! redface.gif Although, most of the cops around here wave or give me the ol' graemlins/thumbsup.gif when I drive the beast by!! How could anyone be mad at a nicely restored Camaro, even if it is kinda loud?? graemlins/beers.gif
DOUG G Jun 16th, 04, 05:20 AM I have the American Thunder system from Flowmaster, and only have resonance at Idle(900rpm)when the motor/exhaust is heated up. At lights and such I can get rid of this by increasing the RPM's a little.
Didn't have all this when system was new,go figure.
joebar Jun 16th, 04, 06:25 AM I am running the flowmaster 40 series on my 68-502, sounds awesome. You guys are right it does kind of get loud cruising the highway at 3000 RPM but still sounds cool. Satisfies this ole 40 something guy
jerry's69454ss Jun 16th, 04, 02:44 PM just finished my exhaust system on my 69 454. it
has hedman 1 3/4" headers 3" outlet to 2 1/2"
pipes all way back. made my own system with mandrel bent 180 bends & 2- 10' lgths of straight
aluminised pipe. made my own "x" pipe & ran them into 2 1/2" dynomax super turbos.great sound.
didn't want a lot of noise.i'm 66 yrs. old & will never quit messing with cars. besides that,my wife
won't ride in a loud car. she thinks i'm nuts to
own & drive a car like this. oh well, i might as well enjoy it now. things could be worse.
69Mike Jun 16th, 04, 04:03 PM I too put Dynomax Super Turbos on my 71 SS chevelle 454. This was with an x-pipe and Headman headers. It is much quiter than the Flowmaster mufflers that came on it. It still makes some racket-especially under WOT. I am restoring a '69 Camaro with a 350ci engine. I will have headers with this one but will probably go with a stock muffler system. My wife wants a quite cruiser. At
55 I am not sure that I want some quite too. Thanks, Mike
thorpe67RS Jun 16th, 04, 04:30 PM Thanks for all the feedback. As i kind of figured...whats to loud or not to loud differs for everyone. I am gonna go with the 40's. I talked to flowmaster and they told me 90% of the guys who buy flowmaster exhausts for their muscle cars go with the american thunder 40's. Time will tell.
