: The right match
seattlegoat Aug 5th, 03, 07:09 PM This have a line on either ported 882's(clean free), a set of Vortecs (never used but dusty $200), or just keep my original heads and save. I'm confused.
Dyno's are welcome
Heads(462's),
Edelbrock 600cfm 1406,
Performer intake,
Cowl induction,
Mallory electronic ignition
Summit Hydraulic 327 Blueprint
222/22 lift: .447/.447
sep: 114 degrees
1.5/8 Afterburner headers
2.1/4 Magnaflow exaust
3.08 10 bolt
700r4 lockup
2200 stall
I like the SR Torkers? $700(at summit)
170 67 cc combustion chamber
* Valve size: 2.020 in. intake, 1.600 in. exhaust
* Rocker arm studs: 3/8 in.
* Valve springs: 1.250 in. single spring, .560 in. max lift
Silver69Camaro Aug 6th, 03, 05:04 AM What's wrong with your current heads?
What kind of porting was one on the 882s? An inexperienced porting job can ruin a set of heads quickly. Why are they free anyway?
Remember, no matter what kind of porting is done, you cannot get the burn characteristics of a Vortec, Fast Burn, E-Tec, etc. But, the Vortecs require extra parts. Here's how I would do it:
-Heads: $200
-Rockers: $50 (look around, you can find them for this price)
-Valve covers: $35 (Summit, chrome)
-Intake Gaskets: $22 (Brent Chevrolet in Kent)
-Intake Manifold: $160 (Summit, Performer; you can find knock-offs for cheaper)
That puts the Vortecs around $477 total, a pretty good deal. They would make more power than the SR Torkers, too. Something to think about.
Rubeng442 Aug 6th, 03, 06:39 AM You are leaving a lot on the table with that cam too. Tighten up the LSA to something about 108 and the appropiate duration for your compression. Vortec work really well and if you follow Matts advice, it can be a great improvement for little money.
67 Plum Aug 6th, 03, 08:58 AM The 882s would lower your comp to much. The 462s you have are good heads. The cam could be better though a split cam .450 in. .470 ex. 225 deg. @.050 in. 235 deg@.050 ex. with a 112 or 110 for a rougher idle would wake up your combo. The vortecs are probably good for 20 to 30 hp. on the present set up but you could get that with a better cam.
seattlegoat Aug 6th, 03, 08:59 AM Thanks for the reply, I like the vortecs too, but they have been sitting open for a couple of years and there is a thick layer of dust and grime inside and out. This worries me.I need to take a closer look at the chambers to see if there is corosion. The 882's had a basic port job to match a rpm intake and headman headers. They look pretty, but I don't think they will flow much better than my 462's.
Could someone dyno these heads for me, and give me some advice on a good match for a cam. I didn't know there was a problem with the crane I have.
Am I losing alot of power? graemlins/sad.gif
I could swap in a different cam, done it before.
67 Plum Aug 6th, 03, 09:03 AM There isnt a problem with it its just an old grind. The newer split cams just make more power. You have to be carefull not to over cam a 327.
seattlegoat Aug 6th, 03, 09:14 AM How about this Powermax from crane?
260 intake/272 exhaust
050 in.: 204 intake/216 exhaust
lift: .427 in. intake/.454 in. exhaust
separation: 112 degrees
67 Plum Aug 6th, 03, 09:53 AM The cam above that would be better 214 @.050 in. 224@.050 ex. .442 in. .465 ex. 112LSA . Comp. Cams has the same cam but on a 110 LSA would give a racier idle.Summitt has the same specs as Crane and its 79.95.
Rubeng442 Aug 6th, 03, 12:07 PM Get a Crane 274 H06 and install it straight up (at 106 ICL).
An even better choice would be:
Comp Cams 268AH-8 install it at 104 ICL....
Oh yeah either keep the 462's or clean up and get the rest of the parts for the vortecs. The advantage of the Vortecs is, possibly, an extra 20 horses and the abilty to do it with lower octane fuel...
travis Aug 6th, 03, 01:33 PM I'd keep your current setup, but if the money is burning a hole in your pocket the vortecs would make more power than any of the other heads listed. If your really worried about them throw a valve job at them...most good shops around here charge about $100-150 for a good 3 angle valve job, surfacing, seals, etc. You current cam, combined with the 76cc 882's, would be a real dog as your compression would be quite low. But, it would work with totally stock vortec heads. The vortecs don't have real strong valve springs...something to consider if you want to get more aggressive with the cam selection.
seattlegoat Aug 6th, 03, 09:47 PM Thanx guys.
I bought the vortecs and will disasemble them to see if they need a grind. They look ok so far.
Silver69Camaro Aug 7th, 03, 05:05 AM Seattlegoat-
Where are you located? I have a old friend in Auburn (been racing and building engines for about 40 years now), and does valve jobs real cheap for people in need of help. Goes by the name of Lisemaki, races a white 9-sec Dodge if you've been to the track.
seattlegoat Aug 7th, 03, 07:37 AM I'm in Wedgwood in Seattle. I'll let you know how the vortecs look, when I get to it.
thanks
