View Full Version : Best rear end??
fade941 Nov 27th, 01, 06:25 AM I have a 68 base model Camaro. I will be putting in a stroked BBC to make 496 cid. I am planning/hoping for approx. 580+ hp with a TH400. I currently have a 10bolt one legger in my car with multi leaf. I called a couple of places yesterday in the Dallas area about what rear end to use. I was told that a 12 bolt would work, but not for long. They recommended the Ford 9". They even said that some tracks require a 9" depending on HP ?? Has anyone heard anything like this? I just want a rear end that will stand up to the occasional time at the track and be street friendly.

gheatly Nov 27th, 01, 11:53 AM No, because you can build a 12-bolt to be almost as strong as a 9-inch. I think the person was referring to the fact that the 12-bolt retains the axles with C-clips. This is a no-no after your car reaches a certain E.T. If you want to run a 12-bolt on the thack, you will have to install C-clip eliminators. The other option is to buy Ford axle ends and special axles. Several shops sell these and that solution is much better than the C-clip eliminators, but also more expensive.
fade941 Nov 27th, 01, 12:08 PM Moser has bolt in 12 bolt posi's for $1800 with new axles, bearings, gears and it has clips. They also have a bolt in 9" with all the same goodies and NO c-clips for $2010. That's why I am leaning towards the 9". I don't know yet what my car is going to run, but I want all the components in place from the beginning to stand up to various buildups of this 454.

Deimos Nov 27th, 01, 02:02 PM An aftermarket 12 bolt rearend is just as strong as any 9 inch ford rearend. It is expensive, but so is an aftermarket 9 inch rearend. The after market ones will stand up to your 580 hp and give you more horsepower do to the more direct drive line angle. The horsepower won't kill your rearend either that is just a power to RPM ratio. What grenades it is your torque whixh you got plenty of. P.S.- If your getting a junkyard ford 9 inch don't get a truck rearend it has thin gears and will break easier. Good Luck,
Jake

ZZZ128 Nov 27th, 01, 03:42 PM I think The rear end Kid Rock has following him is just about right. Front end is not to shabby either.
pdq67 Nov 27th, 01, 05:11 PM I was over at Mosers a couple a weeks ago and those new 12 bolt rearends they have ARE nice!! pdq67
PDQUICK Nov 28th, 01, 03:30 AM A 12 bolt has two bearings supporting the pinion gear, a 9" has three! A twelve bolt will never be as strong as an equivalent 9".
Also, if you want to change gears every so often, you can just throw a new $800 chuck in your 9" versus disassembling your 12 bolt. Besides being cheap and available, these are the two main reasons why everyone in every kind of racing runs the 9"!!
I've blown up enough GM, Auburn and Moser 12 bolt hardware to know that I'll keep my 9"!!!

fade941 Nov 28th, 01, 04:14 AM Speaking of torque, any ideas what a 454 stroked to a 496 with approx 580 hp will have? I talked to a guy the other day that has this motor and it dynod at 583 but I forgot to ask him about torque. Does anybody know of a different/better source for BUILT 9" Ford rear ends? Preferably in Dallas, or at least in Texas.

PDQUICK Nov 28th, 01, 05:49 AM You can call Tex Racing for a center chuck, but they do more roundy-round, NASCAR type stuff.
I've had good luck with DTS in Warren, Michigan. They will send you a complete rear end with all top quality stuff.

fade941 Nov 28th, 01, 07:04 AM Talked to DTS. They have better priced deals than Mo. FYI to anybody looking at the same thing I am. DTS has a bolt in 9" for the first gen Camaro. Truck center section with new tubes, ends, bearings..etc. Track lock posi, 31 spline moser axles for $1850. Upgrade to the nodular center with a support brace (for the BIG hp/tq guys) for $2180.
They also have a 12 bolt, that is 100% new. All new parts just like the 9" but with and Eaton posi for $2150 without upgrades to handle the BIG power. Just in case any of you were wondering.

Everett#2390 Nov 28th, 01, 08:20 AM Alotta choices here...
Pamela Anderson, Portia de Rosa, Daisy Fuentes, J Lo, XFL Cheerleaders, yada, yada, yada. Left yourself open on this question...
Persoanlly, I'd go for a Moser 9" w/12-bolt carrier, less horsepower to turn. Why do you think Super Stock & Stock racers replace with a 12-bolt? Look at the Barracuda in SS/AA for NHRA, He has a 12-bolt underneath, rulebook states any automotive rear end.

Toby T. Nov 29th, 01, 05:15 AM I have a currie 12 bolt with ford axles and large bearings..for about 2K. These axles are expensive...to compare I only paid 2500.00 for my 69 back in 86. Currie tells me the one I have will take just about any abuse my 500 HP blown sb can dish out.
