: Help me nail the 400 combo

I have been reading the topics on AFR and Canfield heads. I need help nailing my combination. Here is the combo:
.040 over 400
10.1 with a 64 cc head
.039 composite gasket
282 magnum solid cam
195 canfield aluminum heads
Edelbrock RPM manifold
750 mechanical secondary double pumper
HEI-kit with msd-6
1 3/4 comp headers
holley red electric fuel pump

Can you guys spot any obvious mismatches?
Where can I get these parts the cheapest?
I have heard you guys speak of getting Canfields from Competition Products.
Would a dual pattern camshaft work better with the Canfields?
I would like to know what cam would really make this combo haul. I would be fine running mean gears and a loose converter.
Thanks guys,
This is just a final check before I annihilate my bank account!

All in all that looks like a good combo. I would go with a newer designed camshaft though.

Your power output really is up to you. That cam should be fine on the street and can probably run low 12s at the track. With a larger cam, some extra compression, a 3500+ stall, and giving up some "streetability", you can run 11s no problem. With a solid roller cam, more compression, race fuel, 4000+ stall, etc, you can run low 11s easily.

Just make sure your gearing is matched to the rest of your combo as well.

i bought my heads from competition products and have no complaints. I have a 355 with the 195's and the dual plane that makes 421 TQ @ 2100...that being said, with the 400 plus motor i would go with a bigger head ( 210) and a victor JR. ...also i think a dual pattern cam would be much better.

Motor sounds just like mine except I am running the xs274s solid cam. 274/280..236/242 with 501/511.

Would you suggest a .015 gasket to squeeze a bit more?

Don't bother with that Holley Red fuel pump. Go for the Holley Blue and use the regulator that comes with it. The Red would in theory supply enough fuel, but they're not the best quality.

If you don't mind I will take Erics suggestion one step farther. Go for the Holley Pro Series pump and get some other brand regulator (Mallory is my prefered brand). The red and blue Holley pumps are not very good quality they are ok for drag only cars but, if you plan to run it on the street a lot they just don't last. You might also look into the BG pumps too, I really liked the last one I had.

Could you guys suggest a solid cam with the potential to break 12 flat. I would like to have the power on tap.
Also, do you guys think the ram air system is a good idea? I think it is a cool (pun) idea.

should i use an extreme solid cam?

I like the 282 Magnum cam you listed if its a mostly street car . . . you could go with the Extreme solid for a little more power, but the good old Magnum is pretty easy on valvetrain parts. It really depends on what you intend to use the car for.

You want a schosh more solid cam then look at Isky's solid cams, imho...

Z-25, maybe Z-27??

But I will say this.. You will get down the road faster with grunt if you are geared AND tired for the street with the good old 282S if not mistaken... And I'm talking 3.42's or 3.55's here so you can still drive it on the highway w/o buzzing her..

What do you say guy's??

I plan on having it in a lightweight car that is built to thrash, that I can drive on the street.
It will be by no means a daily driver.
I would just like an 11 slip on some slicks with lots of tuning.

I don't understand how the isky cams are "more cam".
Aren't the specs slightly less aggressive? It had like .480 lift. I will be running 1.6's though....
I am not that informed, so could someone please post the specs and get me going in the right direction?
Thanks

What about the cam I am running....the comp extreme solid 274. It specs 274/280 with 236/242 at .050 . Lift is 501/511. 110 lobe. I think its a pretty sweet cam for a street bound 400 sbc.

I ran 12.10 at Bakersfield (Famoso) Last week with a close set up. .030 over 400 (406) I use a smaller cam ex268s Edelbrock 70cc heads flat top pistons .005 deck hight performer RPM manifold Th 350 2500 stall 373 10 bolt posi 26/8/15 mt sportsman pro tires and a quadrajet. Full street car on pump gas. p/s 4 core clutch fan STREET CAR. So don't get to carried away, this motor combo works when it pulls low in the gears. This is in a 3300 pound 67 Camaro

400 bored 30 over,280H CompCam (.486 i/e w/1.5 stamped steel rockers) Bored, blueprinted, balanced, stock polished .010x.010 crank,5.7 rods,TRW dished pistons = 9.5ish:1 compression with 76cc stock heads (ported and polished, gasket matched)1.94/1.6 I/E valves. Nothing really fancy at all, but has run a best of 13.51@101.7 with 2.73's on street radials. I have just installed my 3.73's (rear not back in car yet) and computer program showed .2 slower than my actual run and MPH was dead on, now with the 3.73's shows 12.29-12.47 with mufflers,11.94-12.0's w/o. Now this all depends on weather and traction. Got my fingers crossed.

One guy mentioned the blue pumps don't last long on the street ? Anyone have this same problem ?

280H CompCam with 1.6 rockers is .518 lift Vs. .486 w/ 1.5's.
