: What is the purpose of the front bumper to valance bracket ?

I was working on putting my car ('68 RS) back together after coming back home from the paint shop and was wanting to verify where the center bumper to valance bracket goes. I have the AIM and I assume its showing that the bracket goes 'inside' the bumper ? There is another post here that shows the bracket (upper right corner in the image) and the AIM picture:

The other thing I'm wondering is what is this bracket for ? It does not seem to do anything as the small cushion on the bracket does not touch anything. Its like I'm missing something...

Thanks

Yep, inside the bumper. The rubber cushion just barely makes contact with the valance on mine.

Quite honestly, it's function is a mystery to me also :confused:

I guess it'd add a very minimal amount of strength to the bumper by transferring some of the impact to the valance :noway::sad::confused:

Theory #2:o; Maybe to help maintain the proper bumper to valance gap during assembly ?????

I dunno, yur guess is as good as mine. Any '68 engineers out there ?

I did a Google search and came across a reference to it on the Camaros.org site. They had a page that discussed the bumper differences between 67 and 68 years. The 67 bumper is different in one case where it is missing the holes needed for this bracket (67 cars don't have the bracket). So, it was a design decision to put this bracket on.

hmmm, and no description or purpose from CRG either....from the corner mounts in rubber and the rubber cushion in the middle, I think we've got GMs first attempt at a 5 mph bumper:)
