: POR-15 Deals
herbyjr Nov 11th, 09, 08:15 AM Does anyone have any suggestions on the best place to buy POR-15? Do any of our sponsors have it at a smoking price? I'm getting close to doing my complete underside in the POR-15 rust preventative, then covering it with the chassis coat. I need help on how much I'll need, and I need a great price.

HwyStarJoe Nov 11th, 09, 08:46 AM Can't tell you where to get it, but as far as how much I'll give you my experience...
2 of those small cans (4oz.?) did the entire subframe with a foam brush.
No kidding. And that's not sparing it either.
You'll be surprised how far it goes.
herbyjr Nov 11th, 09, 10:37 AM I've used it in the trunk and on the interior floor pan, but I can't decide if 1 quart of each will do the the job. I guess I can start with 1 and order more if needed, but I was hoping to get the rust preventative done in a day and the chassis paint done in a day. If I run out, I'll have to wait until more POR-15 arrives.

Sauron67MM Nov 11th, 09, 10:47 AM I rarely use it but my jobbers have it, try them. You're buying products in the automotive paint industry, think like a shop owner, not a hobbiest. And even jobbers cater to hobbiests' needs.
HwyStarJoe Nov 11th, 09, 10:50 AM True.
And I've seen it on the shelves around here. You just have to look around. No sense in paying shipping and waiting.
Save some gas and break out the phone book.

I just used a quart on my floorboards, and part of the undercarriage. If you have more when your done it can be saved and you will always find something around later for it.
chrisp1 Nov 12th, 09, 02:12 AM I sprayed it the whole underside and firewall. That used about 3/4 of a quart. Then I sprayed the subframe, which used less than 1/2 of a quart. I picked up the quart cans here in town for $40 each.
After you open it though I do believe it has a short shelf life. I refrigerate the unused portion to extend the shelf life.

s4h Nov 17th, 09, 09:30 AM I have been using POR 15 for about 15 years now. As mentioned in a previous post once it is opened it has a very short shelf life. Only buy what you need for the job you are working on at the time.
There is nothing worse than having some left over that you paid good money for that dries up on you...... Just my opinion.

It is my understanding that it is not wise to topcoat por-15 is this correct or has someone done this before with no problems?
Seems like the other day on nastyz28 site I read about someone topcoating it and it didn't stick well.

I've only used the rust preventative coating so far on places that wont take any UV light. From reading oup on it, I've learned that this POR-15 needs a top coat if it is going to take on UVs. Since I'm going to use it for my chassis, it will take some UV light, so I'm going to go ahead and use the POR-15 brand Black-Cote which is specifically designed to be used on top of the POR-15 rust preventative coating. It will be a couple of weeks before I get to it, but I'll let you know how it works if you like.
