Rob, I just did mine and I talked to the professional installer (he is going to install the vinyl top) for his advice and he told me NOT to sand blast it or take it apart. The sand will get in all the bushings and ruin the top frame. He also said that he has seen guys take it apart to restore it and when they put it back together it is never really the same. He said that it loses the "tightness" of the mechanism.
Is what I did was wire wheeled the frame in sections and sprayed it with Eastwood's Chassis black primer. It looked real good in the primer(dull). I then went ahead and used Eastwood's Extreme Chassis Black Satin (60% gloss). There might be a little more gloss than I would like but overall I was happy with the end result. I don't know what the paint color was originally. I would guess that it was probably a dull finish. You can see the frame through the back window and I didn't want mine glossy. The only bad thing was that it was rattle can and the mils are thin...... but the chassis black is supposed to be a harder finish.
Hope that this helped you.... some other guys here might have a better way or better experience and will chime in for you!
