What are the benefits of hooking up your vacuum advance to manifold vacuum? I heard somewhere that it is better for racing but could it foul plugs or anything.

I heard somewhere that it is better for racing but could it foul plugs or anything. oger May 1st, 01, 05:10 AM It doesn't matter where it is or if it is even hooked up at WOT. 68CAMAROZZ4 May 1st, 01, 07:22 AM What about at idle? Codi May 1st, 01, 07:59 AM Vaccum advance should be hooked to a ported source, hence, the carb base. manifold vaccum is constant and not needed. This could cause starting problems and bring in your advance to soon. DjD May 1st, 01, 08:37 AM I don't want to start the taste great less filling debate all over!!! Use the search feature on this site, look through General Tech, Performance and maybe Engine & Drivetrain... Read what has been posted (both sides, ported and non-ported) many many times and then use your own judgment!! Codi - the inital mechanical is what starts the engine. Once started manifold (non-ported) will raise it... ------------------ ...Dennis '69 RS Convertible w/SS trim (http://www.camaroslimited.com/memberscars/den.htm) '96 Z28SS #1679 of 2410 (http://www.camaroslimited.com/graphics/memcars/96ss.jpg) "The Club" (http://camaroslimited.com) Mark W. Winning May 1st, 01, 10:40 AM LOL, DjD. That was just what I was thinking. I will ask one more question though. With an Edelbrock 600 carb, which vacuum port should my distributor be plugged into, drivers side or passengers side? There.... no ported, unported debate! ------------------ ------------------ Mark 1992 Firebird 355/Six Speed (Soon to be LT1) 1991 RS 350 / 700-R4 1987 Toyota Pickup 383 / 500 + HP 10.963 @ 119.95 Slicks / 11.997 @ 114.23 Radials "Speed KILLS, so drive a FORD and live forever!" http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/~racer383/ Member of the "unwanted" 3rd Gen group. gheatly May 1st, 01, 12:46 PM Mark, Which side you hook the vacuum advance up to on the Edelbrock carb depends on which way you turn more often. If you turn to the left more often, hook it up to the right side. The centrifugal force of the turn pushes all of the vacuum to the side opposite of your turn. Also, the speed at which you make your turns is important in making this decision. If you go really fast, the above rule is good. However, if you go thru most turns slow, then you can use either side because you won't be generating a lot of cornering force. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif ------------------ Pearl blue & white 69 Camaro with supercharged 350, Tremec TKO, and 3.73 12-bolt See my website updated 4/16/01 at: www.geocities.com/gheatly (http://www.geocities.com/gheatly) travis May 1st, 01, 01:46 PM So, what you are saying is that the g-forces causes the vaccuum to move around...so then for a drag car, where would you want the vac advance plugged in...the front of the carb or into the manifold behind the carb? Seems that all of the vaccuum would be thrown to the back of the motor... http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif Hey mark, right off the top of my head I believe that the passenger side port is the ported vaccuum...a quick way to confirm that is to see which one sucks at idle...manifold has vac at idle, ported doesnt. ------------------ 375hp 78 Chevy truck 77 Chevy Nova 95 Chevy Lumina 3.4L and building a 78 Nova sldhd May 2nd, 01, 09:52 AM i would just say screw the vacuum and go with a mechanical advance system like this: mount a choke cable in the car under the dash, then attatch the other end to the distributer(one side or the other).leave the hold down nut loose. as you step into the gas peddle you can control the amount of mechnical advance by pushing or pulling on the choke cable. this also helps in controling pinging from cheap gas! |
