i have a choice between buying a gm over the counter 292 head or the 492 turbo head that supposedly crane sold through their catalogs. i have a 302 and running a 11-1 with a 140 camshaft. which head?

Crane Cams sold both the 492 and the 292 head which was monickered the turbo head. Biggest difference is the 492 head has 64cc chambers and the 292 had i think 67cc? The 292 head also had no heatriser hole between the Intake Ports. 292 head also had bigger cc Intake Runners. The 492 was availiable in straight plug and also angle plug versions, the 292 was angle plug only.
I actually bought a set of Crane Superflow heads back around 1974? and they were the 492 angle plug version. They were a Pretty decent head, I ran them on my S/G Vega for about 8 years until I drove over a connecting rod coming out of the water box! LOL, messed 1 up a little.

I've had good experience with the 292 "turbo" heads. I ran 10.90's with a flattop, street solid roller 355 in a Chevy II. I lightly bowl blended them.

I don't have any experience with the 492's.

Make sure whether or not they have the accessory holes drilled into them if you need them. IMO, I wouldn't bother with either one and go with an aftermarket aluminum head, like AFR of Dart. The technology is light years ahead of either of those heads.

I have the 292 Crane Fireball heads and what an improvement. Angle plug makes it nice.
