View Full Version : hoping for 12's
LVZ_CARS Nov 24th, 01, 08:45 PM Hi all..I am new to this board(mostly hanging around team chevelle for a couple of years).
I have started doing a little racing this year and was wondering what you guys think.
69 Camaro/3100#
327/30 over/small dome pistons
Crane Cam 238/244 Dur. 502/516 Lift
AFR 195 heads/1 5/8 headers
Victor Jr. with 1" spacer/750 holley DP
Power Glide/manual valve/3500 stall/1.96 low
4.10/28" tire
Best Time
R/t .519
60 2.002
1/8 8.725
MPH 79.95
1/4 13.551
MPH 104.02
I was hoping for a little better times...maybe high 12's...any advice would be helpful....thanks....
Bob T Nov 25th, 01, 05:09 AM Your engine setup sounds like it likes to be spun to a pretty high rpm. What rpm are you at by the end of 1/4? I think you could benefit with a little steeper gear, a TH350 instead of the Powergilde, and some better traction to get your 60' time down. What kind of traction devices are you using?
BTW, I bet the engine sounds pretty sweet.
Check out this link to "Automotive Calculations By Bowling & Grippo", go to the "RPM & MPH Correlation" and play with gear ratios and tire heights (there's some other cool calculaters there too).
LVZ_CARS Nov 25th, 01, 07:26 AM I am running about 5300-5400 at the end of the 1/4...I really don't think I am getting it to launch hard enough...running some 275/60/15 old slicks and not having a traction problem..not much slippage..the PG was in the car when i bought it with 5.13's...i wanted more of a street/strip car..so the 4.10's..
CamaroNOTcamero Nov 25th, 01, 10:47 AM consider switching to a TH-350 (they also bolt in, you wont need a different crossmember or driveshaft), the steeper 1st gear will cure the 60 ft problems most likely. It might also cause some traction problems which can be cured with SSM lift bars or some sort of traction bar.
heres a graph i made when deciding trans.
TH-350 2.521st x 3.73= 9.40 1st gear
TH-350 x 4.10 =10.33 1st gear
PG 1.921st x 3.73 rear= 7.16 1st gear ratio
PG 1.92 1st x 4.10= 7.87 1st gear
PG 1stx 4.56 = 8.75 1st
PG 1st x 5.13= 9.84
PG 1st x 5.40= 10.37
so there you go a low gear PG with a 5.13 is equal too a th-350 with a 3.73! and a 350 with a 4.10 rear which you have is equal to a PG with a 5.40. Not to mention it also has a 2nd gear to accelerate you even quicker than dropping from 1st to 2nd in a PG, also you wont loose as many RPMs with the 350 during shifts.
CamaroNOTcamero Nov 25th, 01, 10:48 AM the 28" tires are another reason, switching to 26" would bring up the RPMs more, so your crossing the line at a higher RPM, and accelerating quicker.
LVZ_CARS Nov 25th, 01, 11:50 AM I kind of thought the PG was causing me some problems.....need to get a TH-350.....any thoughts on converters.....and next year some new 26" slicks.....
travis Nov 25th, 01, 01:18 PM Definately get a TH350. A 4.56 gear would also help out quite a bit. I would bet a good 4000-4500 stall would also help. With the short stroke of the 327, coupled with the big cam, heads, intake, and carb, this thing is going to want to scream. I would guess your power is peaking somewhere around 6700-6800 rpms. With the right gears, convertor, and traction, very low 12's or high 11's are definately possible.

CamaroNOTcamero Nov 26th, 01, 11:19 AM you'd probably be fine with a 3500 converter, talk to the people at ATI they make awsome converters i've heard.
LoneStar68 Nov 28th, 01, 09:06 AM I would always try to keep the largest tire possible under the car, and then gear from there. I have run 26's, 28's, and 29's (with appropriate gear changes) and now have no traction problems with the 29X10's, and have knocked off about .7 sec in the quarter... Also, most racers I talk with say you need to weigh about 2900# or less to get the benefit of the powerglide. Good luck!
PS. Oh yea, how do you like the AFR 195's? I've been contemplating a set for a couple of months now. Thanks

LVZ_CARS Nov 29th, 01, 04:25 PM Thanks for all the good advice....I really like the AFR 195's....they seem to perform well all through the rpm range but really come alive in the upper rpm's...ATI converters have been mentioned as being very good.....anyone been running their transmissions....I found them on a web page advertising drag transmissions and street/strip one's......
Eric68 Nov 30th, 01, 12:22 PM LVZ_cars,
A friend of mine is running a very similar 327 in a 69. The only difference in the motor is that he has the Comp Cams XE 284 (240/246 @ .050") and Dart Iron Eagle heads. He is running a TH350 with a 4000 RPM stall, 4.10 gears and 27" tires. He's running 12.6's at 104 mph. The big difference in performance is that his 60' times are low 1.7's compared to your 2.0's.
I'd bet that switching to a TH350 and 4000 stall would get you 12.4's or 12.5's. His 4000 stall is a little hairy on the street though.

CamaroNOTcamero Nov 30th, 01, 03:34 PM since were on the topis, does ATI have a website? and whats the addy?
scottcleaver Nov 30th, 01, 04:26 PM You should call the guys at ATI. The tech guys can tell you exactly what you need to know and they keep everything on file after they sell you something so that if you call them back with changes or questions they are up to speed. Very good quality parts and very knowledgable staff IMO. 410-298-4343

oger Nov 30th, 01, 04:31 PM If you change the glide don't give it away that gearset is worth a bunch of money.
CamaroNOTcamero Nov 30th, 01, 05:40 PM scott, i just wanted to see what the produce besides converters.
LVZ_CARS Nov 30th, 01, 06:36 PM The website I found on ATI is www.martelbrothers.com (http://www.martelbrothers.com) go from there...

Lonnie67 Dec 2nd, 01, 07:12 PM It is the Victor Jr that's killing your low end, especially with the spacer. Use a Performer RPM with no spacer. A Holley 650 would help also. You won't loose top end with either.
