Just received a correct interior carpet protector plate (driver side behind brake and gas) for my 69. Arrived today - and while it's in one piece - it's rough, worn and not great looking. Can these be made to look new again? Primer/paint? Buffing?

It's hard plastic and black.

Thanks -

It cleans up ok - but still has a rough and uneven color and texture. Looks like it was painted at one point and could be painted again if done right I guess. I've just never worked with plastic. Cheap part - I'll give it a shot and if I fail...I'll find another one and try again!

If you have to paint it I recommend using SEM plastic paint. They have a two step process, I'm on the road so the terms I'm using for the products may not be 100% correct. The first thing I would do would be to try and get all the old paint off. Then use the SEM plastic prep. It comes in a standard rattle can sized spray and sprays on clear. It helps the paint adhere to the plastic. Then use SEM satin black, it dries to a proper almost flat black and doesn't look to shiney. I use this process on dash clusters, consoles and all the other plastic dash pieces and they look great. I'm pretty sure it would work in this application. You can get SEM products through Eastwood, and locally thru automotive paint stores and sometimes carpet/interior stores.

let us know how it turns out. Also be careful installing this piece do not oversnug the bolts or it will crack down the middle, ask me how I know.
