: New 327 combo to the track finally
Eric68 Apr 23rd, 03, 05:08 PM Today we took my friends 69 Camaro to a test and tune session and got some good passes in. Theought I would share since a few of you guys are building 327's. Here's the combo:
327 short block with 10.3:1 small dome pistons
ProTopline 200cc aluminum heads, 64cc chambers
Comp Cams 282s
Crane Energizer 1.5:1 roller rockers
Victor Jr intake
Holley 650 DP carb
TH350 tranny with 4,000 stall
4.11 gears
Hoosier QTP's
Best run tonight (on pump gas) sorry I don't remember ALL the incrementals. Fastest time was with 6500 RPM shift points.
60'_____1.70
1/8th___7.97
1/4_____12.56
MPH_____105.5
Over all we were really pleased with the cars performance. The two biggest changes were 1) from Dart Iron Eagle heads to Pro Toplines 2) from Comp XE284 cam to Comp 282s.
BigRed-L72 Apr 23rd, 03, 05:32 PM graemlins/thumbsup.gif Nice....With an Ultradyne cam and a dual plane he`ll be hawkin` you down Eric ;)
Just messin` with ya!! graemlins/clonk.gif .
Really though.., thats a real nice combo
pdq67 Apr 23rd, 03, 06:46 PM The guy I got my car back from had put an old .040" over stock 327, rebuilt cast flat-top pistons and all that stuff.
It had a Little Fireball cam in it along with a set of medium valve, -041 heads, (read, 160+ cc or maybe 170), a 300hp/327 AFB cast-iron intake and an adapter for a 600cfm, 1850 Holley. And a set of 1.625" four tube, long Hooker headers!!
My car has an M-20 and 3.31 gears and is a '66 car.
He said when I got it back, that he had a time slip with a set of small, real slicks on it at 12.9!
I don't think a guy needs all that stuff to make a 327 run!!! Imho... pdq67
PS., and I remember driving it a while before I pulled it for my 406 AND it ran like a "Scalded Ape"!!! It wasn't as peaky like my junk 301...
JIM68 Apr 23rd, 03, 06:49 PM thanks Eric, how did the thing run with the iron heads? I still havn't assembled my 327, I guess i'm waiting for the $$$ to order more parts.
sik68 Apr 23rd, 03, 10:49 PM Eric, whoo hoo!!! Now Im seriously looking foward to my setup!
1 question:
About the Victor Jr, do you think that is an ideal single plane for this setup?
2 question:
During install, did you guys advance or retard the cam some? Can you tell me the degrees? Thanks
PS: I think that timeslip is proof that those heads are what they claim to be graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Everett#2390 Apr 24th, 03, 12:31 AM Congrats, waa-hoo-waa!!
Heads and a torque convertor. The engine was broken-in how?
With 3200#, HP using et is 319, HP using mph is 293.
Hopefully there is a large oil cooler for the trans oil since there's a 4K t/conv.
Eric68 Apr 24th, 03, 02:15 AM We made the Vic Jr swap last summer with the old combo and the car picked up a 1/10th. I think the Vic Jr is best in this case because of the 4,000 stall and 4.11 gears. If he had less gear and less stall the Performer RPM would definately be the way to go.
Same with the 200cc heads - if we had less stall and less gear we would have used the 180cc version. But he wants to put these parts on a 383 short block in a year or two anyway so 200cc is the way to go in this case IMO.
The short block is just an old tired stock setup except the Speed Pro .120 dome pistons and a balance job. So the only "breakin" was about 3 years worth of racing.
Cam timing - its installed exactly as Comp wants it. It on a 106* ICL using the 4* advance Comp ground in.
The only really NEW part in the motor is the heads. The cam is the same one I ran in my 383 for a year or two, we just kept the lifters in order and reused the whole thing. We did run the car at 2,000 - 2,500 RPM for 20 minutes like we would for a new cam - probably wasn't necessary though.
ps. Big Red - very funny  But you'll be happy to know that I talked to a guy at the track last night who swapped a Comp 292H for an Ultradyne 284/292 solid F/T and he picked up 1/10th. He was running 11.6's with a 355 Chevy in an old Ford Model T. Kind of a strange setup.
Eric68 Apr 24th, 03, 02:18 AM Jim, the car ran 13.0's with the Dart Iron Eagles and Comp XE284 last season. He did pull off a 12.86 once with the old setup once when he uncapped the exhaust.
Granny's 69 Apr 24th, 03, 04:35 AM Congrats to you and your friend Eric! Those are some great numbers! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Lots of people "bash" the 327 as an un-worthwhile little motor... But your friend's 327 sounds plenty healthy and capable of gobbling up the unsuspecting Mopar or Mustang... :D
With the 282S cam and a 4k stall converter, I would guess that the car sounds pretty "nasty" and isn't too street friendly huh?
Thanks for sharing your 327 combo info. and Good luck at the track this season.
Regards,
Mark P.
68rs406 Apr 24th, 03, 07:23 PM eric, right on. i was curious as to how that thing would run with the pro heads. very impressive numbers. (even being a scoche large for that motor in some peoples opinion) i guess it is safe to say he's fairly impressed with them? unfortunately i won't be able to compare back to back numbers with my pro heads, wish i could, they made a HUGE sotp improvement. good to see another happy user of pro topline heads. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
