: 2 hoods for one car.
okiemark Dec 8th, 09, 11:57 AM when I bought my '68 Camaro, it came with a cowl hood on it, but I also got the original flat hood. Since then I have gotten a stinger hood which is made of fiberglass. I know a fiberglass hood is much lighter and requires different springs, but how hard would it be to make possible for 2 or 3hoods to be interchanged on a car? since I have a stinger hood, there won't be any stripes on the car. it will be one color. if I can make the hoods interchangable, then I'd be more likely to paint the stinger a different color; to mix it up. thoughts?
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Dec 8th, 09, 12:16 PM I like the Idea. I've thought of getting a cowl hood & changing it around. In your case you would have to get different springs for the stinger hood. Also you need to consider where you would store the hood/hoods that are not on the car.
tejasrs/ss Dec 8th, 09, 12:21 PM i'm doing that with my trunk lid, i have one with spoiler and I also have my original trunk lid that I'm going to have painted the same so I can change them up~
okiemark Dec 8th, 09, 12:26 PM I'm happy I got the stinger hood, but that keeps me from putting stripes on the car. that leaves either painting the "stinger" or not. my thought is, if I get tired of looking at the stinger hood, I could put on another one.

what year?
69SS 350 5 Speed Dec 8th, 09, 12:32 PM Do it. Just get the weaker springs for the fiberglass hood and then get a prop rod for use when you have the steel hoods on so you don't have to change springs.

that's what I was thinking, prop rod.
DOUG G Dec 8th, 09, 12:45 PM I can almost guarantee once you install that "Stinger" hood you won't be swapping much if at all :noway: :D

SOA-Nova Dec 8th, 09, 06:28 PM If you opt for being able to swap the hoods you might do like I did on my 73 and 77 Nova's.
Years ago when we went to car shows in the midwest myself and another guy would take the hoods off of our cars and leave them in the motel room during the day and after both of us fighting getting them back on and aligned I came up with a simple cure. After I got the hood aligned I drilled a small 1/8" hole up through the hinge between the hood bolts through that portion of the hinge and through the inner portion of the hood being careful not to go too far and dimple the hood skin.
I can now take the hood off and put it back on and before fully tightening the hood bolts I insert either a 1/8" drill bit through the holes to line things up or in a pinch use a piece of coat hanger and then tighten the bolts down.
On my 77 Nova I found a glass hood for it and after doing the same thing like on my 73 I installed the glass hood on it and after lining it up used the holes already in the hinge to guide the drill bit to drill holes into the inner structure of the glass hood. Now on this one I can swap between the glass and steel hood fairly easily.
This would only work when you do not have to readjust the portion of the hinge bolted to the fender but I would think even on this a pair of holes could be used with one set for one hood and another for the optional hood in that area.
